Chapter 11

It’s warm and the sun is shining. I’m at home in the back yard with Bobby and mom. Bobby and I are running through the sprinklers and mother is yelling at us to get out of her shrubs. Bobby’s hands connect to mine and I swing him around and watch him laugh. I look across the street and see the neighbors playing fetch with their dog. The longer I look I start to see that man again, then Bobby isn’t there, mom isn’t there, I’m not there. It’s gray and cold now. Grant is lying next to me huddled up next to Charlotte. I wake Grant and tell him about the dream I was having. He listens. He sits there and listens to me talk and babble. I don’t know why to he even cares to listen, I wouldn’t even listen to me. But, he does and I love it.

Grant woke Charlotte and we headed out. We needed food so we walked to the nearest Farmers Market. I opened the door to the store and it fell right to the ground. I stepped carefully inside with Grant and Charlotte behind. We gathered food that wasn’t expired already and some things to keep warmth. We got everything together and put it in a cart. We headed outside when we saw a man with a gun in his hand. We ducked behind the fruit aisle and waited until he left. The man paced back and forth in front of the entrance. Does he know we are here? Is he guarding the store? We sat there for hours realizing this guy was never going to leave. “I want to go home.” Charlotte said. “There is no home for us now.” Grant replied. The man stepped in. He raised his gun up ready to shoot. Several other people followed. They came storming in saying, “We know you’re in here!” Charlotte began to cry. I covered her mouth with my hand and held her tight. A guy stood up from behind the bread and started running. They began to shoot. It wasn’t long until the man was on the ground and the men were gone. Grant picked Charlotte up and grabbed my hand. He pulled me and we ran.
