The room around Eve was dark and muggy. The air thick with her breath. She couldn't see much with the light of a small lamp in the corner. The light did not travel far and barely illuminated the walls decorated with scratches. It filled the depths of the cracks displaying each one as it twisted and melded with others. Together they covered the walls in images. Creatures of her imagination. Some were kind others were tortured. Every detail portraying a whirlwind of emotions.
Eve stared into the images she had constructed through the years. Some made with various doses of happiness. Others made sober. The drawings were a book of her time spent after the release of the happy vaccine. Who once was Subject 67341, had been remade into Eve.
The scientists decided to name her Eve after Adam and Eve. It was ironic. The very person believed to have brought things like suffering into humanity was now known for curing it. Eve couldn't help but be bitter about it. She was given a name like a human, but she was never treated as one. The thought was heavy in her mind, fueling her distaste for the life she now lives. As she stared at the black swirls drifting on her ceiling, she let her mind wander, imagining the outside. Reconstructing it with what little memory she had left.
All of a sudden the door to her room made a slight click. She bolted upright as her train of thoughts crashed. Something was off. She knew the scientist's schedules like clockwork. They never break it. She scrambled for her bed and grabbed the small metal piece that had split from the welding. It was small but she knew if she took them by surprise she would have a chance to make a run for it.
The door opened and a tanned hand slipped its way around, a head of tousled blond following behind. Blue eyes locked onto her own brown and she stopped. She did not recognize this man looking at her. He seemed panicked and worn. He dawned the white lab coat of the scientists but underneath he wore a black t-shirt and blue jeans. He seemed very plain.
Eve quickly recovered her attention and brought it back to the situation. He was wearing a lab coat. He was a scientist. Scientists are not to be trusted.
"Please, I know you have something like a weapon, but you need to listen to me", Adam spoke tactfully not wasting a breath on greetings. Eve cocked her head skeptically. She wanted to hate him, but something was stopping her. The other scientists were cold, calculated and emotionless. This scientist, he seemed frazzled and scared. He showed emotions Eve wasn't sure the scientists even had.
"Why should I listen to you?", Eve spoke with her voice hoarse. The sound of it shocked her. She hadn't spoken in forever. She didn't speak, there was no need.
Adam looked at her with determination burning in his eyes. "Because I'm your only way of getting out of here". With those words he had captured Eve's attention. "Oh? Is this a new experiment? What's the goal this time. To see if the vaccine can save someone with a broken dream? Sorry bud, but you can take that vaccine and shove it up your ass". As Eve finished her words the lights dimmed and sirens began to go off. A monotone voice over the speakers began to talk. "code 4053, code 4053".
Adam's eyes widened and he launched himself towards Eve. She wedged the metal piece into his palm and he reached for her. Not stopping the scientist grabbed her hand and pulled her quickly through the door.
She was shocked as he dragged her through the maze of Eden. She had never seen these hallways, in fact she didn't even know they existed. She had been here for years and thought she knew every nook and cranny. Yet here she was caught in fear as she was dragged though unknown halls.
"When we get to the end of the corridor, I need you to trust me", The Scientists voice cut through Eve's confused state. She quickly ripped her wrist from his bleeding hand and stopped dead in her tracks. "trust you? Who even are you? What are you getting out of this?", her voice was sharp enough to make the scientist flinch. He stared at her, and really saw her for the first time. Her eyes were a hollow maroon color. Her almond shaped eyes were lined with thick black lashes. They were neither long nor short. Her face was sunken in with deep curves where her cheeks should have been. She was tall, around 5'10" and he hair was a long brown dipping just long enough to kiss the line of her hips. Bruises covered her body where her t-shirt and shorts didn't cover. She looked like she had come back to life after dying a thousand times.
He was sorry
"I'm trying to fix a mess I should have never made", his voice sounded strained. Eve looked at his eyes and saw the sincerity swirling in them. The type of look someone gives you when a family member has passed away. A look she has known to well. A look she decided she would put her faith in.
The Scientist let out a loud breath, "we have to hurry, at the end of the hall there is a wall with a small door. That door leads to the outside, when we see it, we can't waste a single moment, we have to go through that immediately. You hear me? You have to jump with no second to waste". Eve listened to all the information. "sounds easy enough, I don't have much to lose now do I?". She smiled the kind of smile that breaks your heart to see. It was the smile of a sad goodbye. The smile of accepting heartbreak. It was the smile of someone who knows what they can't help.
With that they both took off sprinting towards the exit. Eve was behind the scientist following his every move. He swerved corners and turns as if he had done this before. He was confident in where he was going and she didn't understand why. As they ran further and further a rotten scent began to waft the air. It was rancid and made her gut twist. Where the hell was he taking her?
Their moment of peace was cut short as she felt a sting against her side. A loud bang echoed the halls and she screamed. The scientist whipped his head to look and saw a bullet had grazed her side. "You need to keep moving! We can treat it when we get outside!", he grabbed her hand and they continued moving. The thunder of footstep followed behind them as bullets flashed by like lighting. The dimmed red light guided the walls. As Eve ran the chaos chased her.
They finally came to the end of the hallway. She could see the door and the smell was so pungent she would vomit if she had eaten anything. Both covering their noses they reached the door. The scientist quickly punched in a long code and the door opened. There was a darkness inside and the smell became overwhelming. "What the fuck", Eve looked at the scientist mortified. The footsteps were closer and she could see the guards taking aim. She looked back at the whole as the scientist began to rush her "you have to go now ill be down right after you. When you get down there you have to go out through the side panel. You should be able to move it". Eve was speechless "What about you?" Eve replied to the sudden suggestion. "Ill be right down behind you", he looked at her hoping she would trust him... and she did.
Eve slid her legs into the opening as the scientist helped her. She looked down and back at him. "Who are you?"? the Scientist smiled at her and the fine lines of his face loosened making him seem younger, "My name is Adam, and I'm sorry for everything". With those words he pushed her into the darkness and shut the door.
