Chapter 22

"What do we do!?" Charlotte almost shouts alarmed at the scream.

"Come on!" I grab her hand and drag her down the stairs.

"We can't get out the hospital will be on lockdown, every exit will be locked automatically as soon as the alarm sounds." she explains.

"Doesn't mean we can't help out who's screaming."

The floor below is full of patients and a couple of doctors. Everyone is pushing and shoving trying to break free and get out even though they can't.

I hear the loud scream again and Charlotte's head snaps towards it pushing through everyone.

"Charlotte don't!" I yell running after her.

"I need to help." I hear her shout back. I manage to get past everyone and I knock straight into the back of her.

She stumbles forward but catches herself in time.

"Sorry." I tell her but she pays no attention. Her eyes are glued to something in the open room before us. I stand behind her looking in to reveal Aurora being held by her throat.

"Please Jai, just let her go." Lydia says softly edging forward. Jai? My brother Jai? I stare at the boy concentrating and it is him!

"Jai!" I add shell shocked.

"Beau? Beau!" he sighs in relief letting go of Aurora. Lydia turns sideways facing me.

"I wasn't allowed to tell you. I wanted to."

"Why is he here?" I ask her.

"He accidentally killed someone. I'll explain in more detail once everything's sorted here." I nod understanding as she disappears out of the room. 

Slowly but carefully everyone returned to their rooms. Charrlotte left me in one of the visiting rooms saying she'd go and get Jai so he could tell me why he's here by himself.

"I'll leave you two to it." Charlotte smiles allowing Jai to walk in.

"Thank you." we both say in unison as she leaves closing the door behind her.

"So I heard you murdered someone?" I say as soon as we're definitely alone.

"It was an accident. I got into a fight and something took over me, I couldn't stop hitting him." Jai tells me honestly keeping his eyes on the table that's separating us.

"So you're stuck in here too?" I sigh crossing my arms across my chest.

"Looks that way although I'm not complaining. Some of the staff are fit." he laughs and I join in lightly.

"Do you want to explain what's happened to you? Never did I think you'd end up in here. You're  the innocent one of the family."

"I told you what happened."

"Full details." I scowl.

"Okay, so I was out with my friends and the boys that used to bully me kept hassling us, I felt nervous but I realised I needed to stand up for myself. They started yelling and swearing at me, abusing me from a distance so I stormed over there, grabbed the one boy by the throat and threw him to the floor. His friend shoved me so it made me ten times more pissed off. I spun around quickly connecting my fist with his jaw. He fell to the floor but this time I wasn't backing down. Something took over me and I started hitting him continuously until eventually I was pulled off. The rest was a blur as I got dragged away. All I could hear was people screaming and shouting saying that he wasn't breathing. Apparently he died at the hospital but I don't care. I'd happily do it all over again." I nod understanding him although I'm definitely starting to question my younger brother's sanity.

"Y-you enjoyed it?" I raise my eyebrow leaning back slightly.

"Yeah, I think I did. It felt good to get revenge on him. He ruined my life. Constantly bullying me for years, Luke wouldn't help and you weren't around." he says sadly.

"If I was I would've stopped it."

"I know. But you weren't but that's something we both just have to live with. You're my big brother. Nothing will ever change that."

I walk over to him giving my brother a "bro hug". A door shuts behind me causing us both to jump in surprise.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt." Charlotte says awkwardly. "Do you need a few more minutes?" she offers but I've heard all I've needed to for today. I look at Jai who shakes his head.

"No, we're done." I tell her walking away from Jai as Aurora takes him off somewhere. 

"Let's go." Charlotte smiles weakly.

"What's going to happen to him?" I ask her, worry laced in my voice. I don't want them to hurt him in any way or I will go nuts.

"Um, I'm not sure. Right now Aurora is taking him for a check up with the doctor and things like that. He'll be roomed on the same floor as you so you won't be too far apart. I made sure you two would be close." she assures me.

"Okay, cool. What do you mean by check ups?"

"You know the first day you came here they took some blood for tests, records and things? It's that."

"Oh right. I need a review of those apparently, the doctor said so."

"Yeah I know. You have it first thing tomorrow. I'm doing it though."

"There's no way you're coming near me with a needle, have you seen how clumsy you are!" I mock.

"I am not clumsy!" she insists. 

"3, 2, 1." and then she trips. Luckily she only stumbles and doesn't hit the floor. "See." I mutter smirking.

"Get lost Brooks." she replies poking her tongue out at me. I laugh lightly shoving her to the side. "Get in your room." she gestures towards my door. God we got here fast.

"Do I have to." I pout as she locks the door behind.

"Yep. Now go to sleep for a bit. It'll be time for food soon." I scrunch my nose up at the thought. The food here is disgusting.

"Good night Charlotte." I grin as she walks off.

"Night Beau." she calls back. I lie on the bed sighing loudly. I hate this place, some of the people are fine but I really hate it here.

My eyes slowly flutter shut falling asleep.
