My name is Madeline, and I can see people's wings. As far as I know I'm the only person who can see them, but I don't really mind. They allow me to learn more about everyone I see. They can vary in size and color, and it's not hard to tell a lot about someone from that alone. They move as well, stretching out to hold a loved one or flaring when someone not so cherished comes along. Ive never seen anything physical be able to interact with them as well, but one morning that changed.
'BEEP' 'BEEP' ' BEEP'. I grudgingly open my eyes and slam my hand down hard on my alarm clock, hoping to silence its impetuous beeping. It's 6:30am, Monday. I unwillingly sit up in my bed and slowly remove the warm covers and place my feet on the cold floor. I stand up, get dressed, and comb my long, straight, golden hair, before running downstairs. I say hi to my mom and then run out the door.
Something I've noticed about people's wings is that the more confident the person is, the bigger their wings are. The more secrets or sins the person has, the darker their wings color. It helps when making friends and knowing who to stay away from.
I arrive at school and walk up the steps to the building. "Madeline!" I hear, as I open the doors to the school. I take a step back and turn around, only to see my best friend Blakely. She runs up to me out of breath, "Hey Maddie! Anything new?" She says, as her vibrant blue wings with gold specks perk up with excitement. "No Blake." I reply, as we start walking to our first period, Japanese. Me and Blakely have all of our classes together, so we are always together. When we reach the class we walk in and sit down in two desks next to each other in the third row.
"Omg!" I dreadfully hear, as Kat and her 'Squad' walk in. Kat is the most annoying human being to ever exist, her wings are huge and a dark maroon color. She's the most popular girl in school, but she doesn't hate me and I don't outwardly hate her, only on the inside. "Hey Madeline! Hey Blakely!" Kat says as her and her followers sit right behind us. "There's this new guy here and he's totally weird." Says Kat to me and Blakely. "He's like really quiet too." 'Not everyone has to be loud like you Kat' I think to my self. I turn around to face Kat and say In an interested voice, "Oh really?" As to entertain the fact that I agree. "Yeah! But thankfully we don't have any classes with him!" One of Kat's followers say proudly. I turn back around and roll my eyes as the teacher begins the lesson.
The 'end of school' bell rang with a joyous chorus of children screaming excitedly at the thought of leaving this prison. Me and Blakely walk out of the school doors and say our goodbyes. "So Maddie! This weekend, my house! Don't forget!" Blakely says to me as she runs off. "I won't!" I yell back at her. I'm standing at the entrance to the school getting ready to walk home when I see someone which two charred stumps where their wings should be.
I looked at the small stumps as the person looked at me and noticed my staring. He was that new kid Kat was telling me about. He made his way across the street and looked at me with both anger and fear in his eyes. "You can see them, can't you?" I moved back a step though we were a good arms length apart. "I don't know what you mean..." He clicked his tongue in annoyance, "don't lie, your obviously bad at it."
"Fine. I can." I say in defeat. I thought he was going to say something else but when I took my first good look at him I realized, he doesn't look so good and that he didn't come from the school, he came from the direction of the neighborhood across the street.
He looked at me straight in the eyes, and gestured to a young girl playing down the street, who, now that I looked, had beautiful blue and black wings that were far to large for her. "It was worth the cost..." his voice made me look back just in time to see him slump over and fall to the ground.
