Chapter 15
Still December 1st
9:46pm
“Elizabeth?” I hear a voice. I immediately know it’s my mum’s. I close my eyes, running my hand absent mindedly through my hair.
She pulls open my door, without bothering to knock.
“When did the hospital call?” she wondered, her voice shaking as she fiddled with a small charm on her bracelet, but kept her eyes locked on mine. I always questioned why she wore that bracelet. It had been a birthday present from my father on their tenth anniversary. Every year she added more charms to it, cluttering up the dangling chain that was always glued to her wrist. I never knew why she continued to wear it though, and continued to add a delicate charm to the many others. When she had started fighting with my father, everything had changed, though I didn’t know why they hadn’t divorced, they knew they hated each other, I knew they did. I guess it was some kind of security to have someone that’s tied to you, but I could never truly figure it out.
I just shrug, eying her as she scrolled through the recent call display, something she did every night incase one of us missed an important call, “I didn’t know they called.” I say, getting up slowly and crossing the floor to my closet. My eyes flickered quickly back in her direction, but she was turned away from me, her back arched and her hands clasped together.
“Actually,” I start, remembering the promise I had made a few entries ago, about trying to get well, for Harry’s sake. I breathe in deeply. “Actually they did call.” I found myself saying. I clamp my eyes shut once more and bit my lip, turning back to face her completely. “They, uhm---” I could do this. I could do this. I repeated over and over, trying to convince myself. “they, told me what’s wrong with me.” I finished, my voice breaking when I said ‘wrong’. I didn’t want to think about it. I would rather do anything else in the world. But I promised, and I would keep that promise, for Harry.
Her head shot up, her eyes catching mine. “They what?” she stumbled.
“The woman called, and I talked to her. I wasn’t really, uhm, supposed to.” I confessed, dangling my hands that had just sat in my pockets, by my sides.
She looked back to me, prodding a continuation.
I sighed, sucking on my upper lip, something I did a lot when I was nervous. “I couldn’t wait mum, I couldn’t wait and have the anticipation of knowing killing me until you got home. I uhm---” I stopped, wondering how my mum would take it. She was never a fan of me doing these types of things.
