That is the way leaves fall around a tree in autumn, a tree unaware of the rain running down its sides, of the sun or the frost, and of life gradually retreating inward. The tree does not die. It waits.
-Hermann Hesse, "Demian".

Splashes in the deep fog behind us brought a cold chill down my spine and I broke out into a damp sweat as Jimin pulled me forward. Each splash caused a swarm of moths to form under and around us as my lungs began to burn at the hard pace we kept. My shoulder was going to come out of socket if he pulled any harder. A low gurgling hiss crept into my ears as Jimin yanked on my wrist. I held the key in a death grip in my other hand, my fingers going numb with the effort.

I turned to look, a morbid curiosity steering my eyes behind me. There in the darkening void behind us were three sets of sinister glowing white eyes that watched our egress. A vile smell of mold and decay smashed into my nostrils as my heart sped up. The smell washed over us and caused my eyes to sting. Bile rose up and burned my throat and I fought my insides to hold it at bay.

Something was truly coming for me. This entire time the fog merely made me wary and now I realized without a doubt it was because it held an unfathomable horror.

I cried out as Jimin harshly kept tugging me forward towards the only salvation in this dark realm, the tree.

The gurgling in the water grew louder and I began to see something trying to break the surface behind us as it surged forward. I couldn't look anymore with fear clouding my reasoning and I prayed that whatever was behind me would quit its pursuit. Screeches and hisses rattled my eardrums.

We were almost to the tree, perhaps only fifty yards away, yet with each step my legs seemed to grow heavier as I lost hope that I would make it. I suddenly had this feeling that if I just laid in the warm water beneath me that it would be over soon. The water seemed inviting and sapped my strength as I moved through it. My heart rate slowed and my world moved as if almost paused.
