Ninekit slowly opened her emerald eyes, waking from her sleep. Ninekit was one of the oldest kits in the nursery, nearly ready to be named as an apprentice.

"Ninekit! Ninekit!" Ninekit suddenly jumped up hearing her name being called.

"What is it?!" Ninekit looked in front of her to see Smokekit with a smug look on his face. Ninekit's tail immediately dropped.

"Ugh, what do you want?" Smokekit purred.

"Lionheart and Whitestorm brought back a kittypet to be made an apprentice. Longtail didn't take to kindly to that and tried to fight him. Somehow, the kittypet won! So now if you see an orange cat just realize that's him." By seeing how Smokekit's smug look turned into disgust, Ninekit could guess that he agreed that the kittypet didn't belong here.

"Well, move out of my way, furball! I want to meet him!" Ninekit shouldered the grey kit out of the way running out of the den. Ninekit looked around, looking for a orange cat. Soon her eyes laid on a flame-colored tom cat, about her size. She ran over to him.

"Hey! Hey!" The tom seemed to notice her, because he turned his head, revealing his emerald eyes. She skidded right up to the orange tom.

"Are you the kittypet everyone's talking about?" The tom purred.

"Yes, my name's Firepaw, and you are . . . ?"

"I'm—"

"She's Ninekit." Ninekit whipped her head around by very familiar voice. The familiar came from none other than Greypaw.

"She's gonna be an apprentice soon, I've been hearing the queens complaining about how big she and Smokekit are." Ninekit growled under her breath. Before she could lash an insult she saw a familiar grayish-blue she-cat walking into the nursery. Huh, why is Bluestar—

"Ninekit!"

"Oh! I got to go!" Ninekit dashed back into the nursery. But she immediately froze when she saw both her foster mother, Brindleface, and Bluestar were looking at her.

"Ninekit. Brindleface says it seems like your ready to became an apprentice. I already have a warrior picked out to be your mentor." Excitement flooded through Ninekit's body, like water. She was going to be an apprentice! Before she celebrate, she heard a yowl coming from the entrance of the camp. Bluestar darted out of the nursery, going to where the yowl came from.

"Ravenpaw? What's wrong? Where's Redtail and Tigerclaw?" Ninekit peeked out of the nursery, spotting Bluestar standing in front of the small black apprentice.

"Re-Redtail's . . ."

"Redtail's what?"

"R-Redtail's dead."

The whole camp became completely silent. Ninekit's eyes widened, Redtail was dead?! How?!

(Ok, I don't want to take exactly what Ravenpaw said from out of Into the Wild, so it's gonna be changed a bit.)

"We met a RiverClan patrol near the Sunningrocks, Oakheart was with them," Ninekit knew a little bit of Oakheart, wasn't he the RiverClan deputy? "Redtail warned Oakheart to stop hunting in ThunderClan's territory. He also said that if another RiverClan warrior was seen in ThunderClan's territory, they would be killed on the spot. Oakheart didn't let that back him down, he said his Clan needed food, no matter what."

Ravenpaw coughed a bit before he continued.

"That's when the fight started. I couldn't see much, there was a lot of fighting. But I could see that Oakheart had Redtail pinned to the ground, but soon, Redtail . . ." Ravenpaw collapsed on the ground. Ninekit wished she could help him, she really did. But there was nothing she could do.

————

Ninekit looked up at the star-covered sky, each star represented one of the Clans warrior ancestors. Many questions ran through Ninekit's head.

Did Oakheart actually kill Redtail?

Why did Tigerclaw have a glint of disapproval in his eyes when Lionheart was appointed deputy?

Who would be Ninekit's mentor?

A yawn echoed from behind Ninekit as she turned around to see Brindleface.

"Ninekit . . . what are you doing, being up so late? You need sleep for tomorrow."

"I know but, I just so excited to become an apprentice!"

Brindleface rubbed her eyes.

"I know you are, Ninekit, but at least get some sleep for tomorrow."

Ninekit pouted. "Fine . . ." She walked over to her foster mother and curled up next to her.

————

"Ninekit."

"Ninekit . . ."

"Ninekit!"

Ninekit woke up to be met with blue eyes from Smokekit.

"Come on! Our apprentice ceremony is today!" Oh mouse dung, I forgot it was today! Ninekit quickly jumped to her paws and ran after Smokekit.

"Let all cats old enough to catch there own prey gather around the highrock for a Clan meeting!" Bluestar's voice rang out from the camp. Cats started gathering up. Ninekit sat next to Smokekit.

"Today, we have two kits, ready to become apprentices. Come up, Ninekit and Smokekit." Ninekit raised herself from her sitting position, sitting down next to Bluestar and Smokekit on the highrock.

"Smokekit, Ninekit, do you promise to fight along side your Clanmates?"

"We do" both of them said at the same time. Ninekit tried so hard not to make her tail shake, since she was so excited.

"Then until you receive your warrior names, you shall be known as Smokepaw and Ninepaw. Smokepaw, your mentor will be Runningwind. Ninepaw, your mentor will be Tigerclaw." Ninepaw looked down to see Runningwind and Tigerclaw raising from there sitting position, climbing up to the highrock to meet their apprentices. While Runningwind touched noses with Smokepaw, Tigerclaw touched noses with Ninepaw.

"The Clan is now dismissed." Bluestar jumped down from the highrock. As Ninepaw and Smokepaw came down from the highrock, many cats congratulated them. Ninepaw saw Smokepaw go to Runningwind, so Ninepaw looked for Tigerclaw, soon finding him beckoning her with his tail. The pale orange apprentice padded over the her mentor.

"Er . . . Tigerclaw, what should I do now?" There was something is Tigerclaw's eyes that Ninepaw couldn't make out.

"Go get some moss for your bed, and then rest up. You'll need your energy for tomorrow." Tigerclaw growled.

Ninepaw nodded her head then started heading out of the camp.

————

Ninepaw finally put the last of her moss on her bed in the Apprentice den. She had decided to sleep between Firepaw and Graypaw. They seemed nice enough. Ninepaw soon saw Graypaw curling up on his bed, falling asleep. Firepaw did the same. Ninepaw curled up between the two, feeling a bit of their on each side of her. Ninepaw soon yawned and fell asleep.
