I had gotten everything ready for the youth group meeting-taking place in less than thirty minutes. I really hated that I had to cancel my plans with Tristan but I did make a commitment to my father when it came to helping out around the church.
“How long this thing gonna take. I want to get to this party across town.” Everyone was already seated when the last person showed up. It was some boy with baggy pants and a black hoodie on. He looked like a gangsta straight out of a rap music video. I could tell he was at risk, at risk of ignorance 101. “This meeting will last until eight,” I answered as the boy took a seat.
The meeting was over right at eight like I said. The second I said the meeting was over everyone rushed out of the room. I had handed out pamphlets and showed a film. None of the teens seemed interested I felt as if the whole thing had been a waste of time. I really should have just asked my dad to reschedule the meeting.
Once I locked up the church and got into my car I checked my phone to see if Tristan may have called. He hadn’t but I wish he had. I drove straight home I still had a chapter to read for my English class. I really needed to not wait until the last minute to do my homework.

I had been at this party with James for over an hour and Marcus still hadn’t showed up. I was working on my second beer when Marcus finally showed up. “Man where have you been,” I asked? He grabbed a beer and took a seat. “I had to go to this lame ass youth group meeting at the church. I swear I wish I could get the time I wasted there back. But at least the girl hosting it was a hottie. I always liked Cilia Carter.” Marcus said. I hadn’t known he went to Cecilia’s meeting. If I had of known he was going I would have at least had an excuse to show up too. “Man you know the pastor’s daughter ain’t ever gonna give you the time of day,” James chimed in. I laughed because he was right. Cilia wasn’t into the gangster type and that was all Marcus was. Running the streets and hoes was his motto.
“And she’d give your white ass the time of day. At least I could date her in the open. If someone like you even tried to get at her she’d have to kiss you behind closed doors.” Marcus said taking a swig of his beer. Marcus was mixed so him dating Cecilia would be more accepted than her dating James or I seeing that James was as white as me but had more of the fake gangster thing going on. James was always trying to act hard like he grew up in the hood or something, when he knew he wasn’t about that life.
“I ain’t even tripping on CC I got a shawty for everyday of the week,” James said. Exactly like I said he’s always trying to act as if he has something going on. “Whatever man I’m gonna find me a girl I ain’t gotta work hard for,” Marcus said. James and I laughed as Marcus went to scan the crowd. “So you looking for a shawty tonight. I know Kimberly been asking about you,” James said. Kimberly had been a girl I could never shake she was so easy all you had to do was get her a drink and she’d be in your bed for the night. Back in the day I would have jumped at the chance to be with a girl like her for the night but ever since getting with Cecilia I’d tried to reform my player ways. “Naw I don’t want her. You take a shot at her,” I said. James didn’t need to be told twice he got up and went in search of Kim.

When I finished my reading for class I called Tristan. He didn’t answer right away which wasn’t odd. Sometimes Tristan just didn’t keep up with his phone. I couldn’t remember how many times I had called him and his friends answered and I had to hang up so there wouldn’t be questions.
I called Tristan a couple more time and finally someone answered. “J-Dog who it is!” I hung up the phone really quick and bust out laughing. James was always answering Tristan’s phone with some lame line.
I had met Tristan’s friend James once and that was all I needed to know his life story. James was the biggest clown I’d ever met. But he was a cool guy. Besides James I hadn’t hung out with or met any of Tristan’s other friends. I tried to keep Tristan and I’s relationship separate from our private lives. He hadn’t met my friends and I hadn’t met any of his except for James. Tristan didn’t see the big deal but I was just trying to protect us.
Shortly after hanging up on James Tristan called me. “Babe did you call me,” Tristan asked? I could hear a lot of loud music in the background. “Yeah but J-Dog answered.” I said still laughing at how James answered the phone. “So what’d you want,” Tristan said.
“Just calling to tell you we could meet tomorrow after school at the lake. I don’t have anything to do tomorrow afternoon,” I said. I was in a lot of clubs and groups at my school but I had no meetings this upcoming week, which meant more time with Tristan.
“Ok the lake’s fine. I’ll meet you around four,” Tristan said. We said our good-byes after setting our plans and I went to bed. I had to get some beauty sleep.
