"Happy 16th birthday, sweetheart." My mom said to me as she kissed my forehead. She tried to sound energetic, but her voice got smaller as she finished up the sentence. "Make a wish." She stood up and went back to her seat.

Even though if I make a wish, it won't happen. I inched my face closer to the colorful candles that were stuck in the cake. My wish is to not be sent over the border. And like that, I blew at the candles, and everything went black.

Mom managed to find the candles and matches. The room was filled with light after a few seconds. Dad came up to me and congratulated that I am officially a young woman and that I needed to get some sleep, since tomorrow is 'the day'.

Tomorrow is the day, where all the teens who are 16 are sent outside the border, or the protected area. Nobody knows what has happened there. Nor anybody wants to remember anything.

After the war, California became a ruin. Undiscovered animals started to appear due to the nuclear bombs. Millions of people were killed, and they set up the borders to prevent any further attacks, but the animas kept developing and changing. Some of them flew over the fence in occasions and attacked thte city. To prevent any sacrifices or deaths, all the teens that are 16 are sent over the border to prevent anymore deaths, and to help then train, gain stregnth for a solid month. And for me, that's going to be tomorrow.

I quickly nod and go upstairs, to my room. My room was dark, but I had no trouble finding my bed. Laying down, I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but no luck. I decided to have a small walk ouside.

*

Hot air meets my face and instantly, I feel relieved. But I had to hide somewhere or end this walk quick, because being out at night would be illegal, and you'll be sent to the court or the military. Thinking about the military made me think about what's going to happen tomorrow. I'll be going to the city hall with a bunch of other kids, the mayor will give a short speech, give out our uniforms, weapons and things that we for surviving and we'll ride a train to the border. After that, we're unprotected. We'll have to find our own food, find our own shelter, and if it's necesary, we'll have to kill each other. No rules. We just need to survive.

The purpose of sending us is to train us so that we'll be able to survive when there's an attack from the creatures in the future. But is it really necessary to send kids outside the border, where out saftey isn't guaranteed?

I feel someone is near me, and run as the hot air swishes around my body and my hair is falling off from the ponytail that I put on before I went to bed. I don't know where I'm going, but I'm sure of one thing: someone's coming after me.

"Stop!" The voice behind hollered. Panting, I turned around, and saw that it was my friend, Demi.

"What are you doing here? You're supposed to be in bed." I asked, sitting down on the grass.

"Well aren't you supposed to be in bed also?" She put her thin, blonde hair up and sat nex to me. "I couldn't sleep. I'm nervous."

"I'm terrified."

We talked for a few minutes, until we saw a soldier coming down to check if anybody's awake. When he came towards us, we hid in the bushes and was there until he was gone, and said goodbye to each other. As I walked towards home, I noticed that I wouldn't be able to be this peaceful for a month. I won't be able to enjoy my peace anomore. Once I go out there, everything is my enemy.
