Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland

It was a hot day on June 10 , 1940 . It was a very special day too. One of Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer's biggest stars was turning 18. That's right Judy Garland was turning 18 today. Many stars turned out for Judy's party at Mr. Mayer beach house in Santa Monica . Stars like Mickey Rooney , George Murphy, Clark Gable , Lana Turner , Ann Rutherford , Ann Miller , Deanna Durbin all attended . Many other people attended as well. Judy had transformed into a gorgeous girl but to the boys at the studio she was just Judy or to Mickey she was Joots . They didn't notice how beautiful she was , until today that was. Judy wore a red dress with her cleavage showing just a little. She wore long white gloves and studded earrings. Today she looked absolutely sensational and the boys were starting to notice. Mr . Mayer had Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra playing for Judy's party and Tommy called her up to sing a song . The song she sang she would sing again three years later in a movie she does with Mickey and Tommy called Girl Crazy. She sang Embraceable You to the guests and she had everyone in a trance. The boys especially we're into the song . Each one slightly hoping it was dedicated to them. After she finished singing she passed by the table in which her guests sat in and as she walked by Clark Gable and Errol Flynn playfully whistled at her . She started laughing and blushing before returning to her seat . The boys all rushed to Judy trying to be the first person she dances with . Mickey ended up reaching her first and they did the jitterbug on the makeshift dance floor as everyone watched from the the side . Soon Mickey had to hand her off to some other fella so she could dance with him . After some hours of dancing Mr . Mayer stopped the music and called Mickey and Judy to where he was standing to announce they would be starring together in another barn yard musical called Strike Up The Band . Everyone clapped for Mickey and Judy but she wasn't too happy. She was getting tired of playing Mickey's little sidekick , the girl he never notices until the end of the movie. Sure she loved Mick he was her pal but she wanted roles that were more suited for her age . She was sure Mickey felt the same . Then Mr . Mayer announced she would be doing another movie at the same time called Little Nellie Kelly . She would play both the mother and daughter in the movie with both George Murphy and Douglas McPhail as her love interests. This made a little bit more happy . She would finally had a somewhat adult role. After the announcements the party commenced and Judy was back on the dance floor with Mickey . When the party had ended Mickey offered to take Judy home in his car. Judy accepted she didn't want to go home with her mother and step-father. It was a long ride home in the dark and every so often Mickey would glance at Judy and Judy would do the same to Mickey. They arrived at the Garland-Gilmore household after Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore did. Mickey walked Judy to the door and gave her a sweet kiss. He was about to give her another kiss before leaving but this time on the cheek . Before his kissed her check she moved not realizing he was going to kiss her and kiss landed on her lips . After there lips touched they didn't pull apart. They held each other close savoring the feeling of being together away from cameras. Their little lip lock grew more intense before Mickey came to his senses and pulled away. He saw the hurt look on Judy's face so he kissed her once again on the lips before telling her they were going to have a date at the Brown Derby. He wished her a good night and she did the same for him. As they both went into their rooms' at their houses' they wore similar goofy smiles . While getting ready for bed they were thinking the same thing ' this has been the best day ever!' And it was for both of them . Judy had known she liked Mickey for a long time but Mickey needed to realize how much he really liked her. Gee he sure did like her . He was lucky to get to her before all those other guys and she was lucky the famous Mickey Rooney was interested in her . But boy those two were one hell of a team . He was Mick and she was Joots.
