James Potter was now the father of a one-year-old wizard. For celebration, he went to Diagon Ally for some watermelon.
When James got back to his house in Godric's Hollow, he found a nasty surprise - one room, Harry's room to be exact (Harry was his one-year-old child), was blasted apart. He heard faint crying.
James ran inside, to the second floor, then to Harry's room. He expected Harry to be dead, and Lily, his wife, to be sobbing, but it was the opposite.
Lily Evans (now Lily Potter) was laying dead on the ground as Harry Potter sat in his crib, crying.
James walked over to his crying child, tears in his eyes. He looked at Harry's bright green eyes, not unlike his dead mother's. James' eyes ran up to his son's forehead. Something wasn't right . . .
There was a lightning shaped scar etched upon Harry Potters forehead.
James Potter screamed, tears leaking down his face. He ran into his bedroom, pulled out some parchment, a quill, and some ink out of a drawer, then started writing to his friends.
Dear Moony, Wormtail, and Padfoot
It's Prongs here. I just went out for watermelon (seeing as Harry turned one today), and I came back to find Lily . . . dead.
Harry is still alive, but he has a scar on his forehead.
Please come as quick as you can,
Yours sincerely,
James Potter
James wrote this down on three different pieces of parchment, called for his owl, Withle, and tied each piece of parchment to his leg.
"Take these to Remus, Peter, and Sirius as quick as you can," James told the owl. "I need them there as soon as possible, okay?"
The owl hooted, then flew out of the window. James went back into Harry's room, and took Harry out of his crib. James sat down by Lily, tears coming to his eyes.
"I should've taken everyone," James whispered to his wife's dead body. "It's all my fault."
"Dada," said Harry.
"Yes, Harry?" said James softly.
"When Mama get up?"
James's smile faded away. "Never." He cracked. It felt as if everything inside of him shattered. Tears poured down James Potter's face.
After James sat there crying for about five minutes, a loud crack sounded through the house.
"James?" someone called. "James? JAMES?!"
"R-Remus!" James called. "I'm in Harry's room!"
Footsteps echoed loudly.
"Jam-" Remus stopped mid-word and stared at the floor. "I thought this was one of your jokes . . . I didn't know it was real."
James didn't respond. He just sat there and cried.
Later, two more loud cracks echoed through the house.
