Sonic's POV
———————————————————
We sit under a cherry tree, the breeze carrying any petals that broke off from the flowers above. The sun was setting, and we wanted to watch it go down together. Shadow looks over to me and sighs.
"Sonic, I know we've been together for almost a year now, but I still can't help but question if I'm good enough for you." I look at him in shock. I didn't understand why he had felt this way.
"What? Of course you're good enough. You're more than enough! For the year we've been together and even before when we were still just friends you have made me the happiest hedgehog alive! Why do you feel like you're not enough?"
"Well, it's really just a fear of mine. I'm afraid that someday I won't be enough for you. I'm afraid to go back to how things were before we had met. Before you changed me."
That's right. Before I met Shadow, he was someone who was bent on revenge. After his one and only friend, Maria, was murdered in front of him, he sought only to rid this world of humanity. He says that when I came along, I changed his way of thinking. I made him value humanity and he accepted us as his friends. Yeah sometimes he was a pain to be around, but he has changed a lot since then. He's still quite the pessimist, but it's more tolerable. Then, we realized that we both had a thing for each other. Almost a year later and here we are, happy together in a loving relationship, and he's talking about not being good enough. I shake my head as I smile.
"You know, sometimes I think you worry too much. You will always be good enough for me Shadow. Never forget that." He looks down in silence before smiling again. He doesn't smile all that much, so it's always good to see him smile every once in a while. "Now, how about we go for a little run before it gets too dark out." He nods and stands up with me. We stretch before we run off. We run around the field first before we notice an ominous looking forest. Me, being a curious bastard, decided that we should explore. Shadow, being the wise one between us, advised against it. He followed me inside anyway, despite his pleas to turn around.
"Shadow, what's wrong? Why don't you want to explore?"
"I don't feel right about us being here. It's not safe, I can feel it." I roll my eyes and head inside. He follows me in.
After a while of walking, we stumble across an old worn down building. Curiosity gets the better of me, and I start to approach it, Shadow close behind. He must've felt an overwhelming curiosity too. The building was taken over by wild ferns. I get up on top of it, the building being partially sunken into the ground. I move some of the ferns over and see a symbol. A symbol that's all to familiar to me.
"This is one of Egghead's buildings. Must have hidden it here a while ago and then abandoned it. Who knows how long this has been here."
"I don't like it. There's something off about this place." I slide down the side of the building and land beside Shadow. I walk towards the entrance and make my way inside. I look around but it was too dark to see. I turn to face Shadow.
"I can't find a way thr-" the ground caves in underneath me and I plummet below. I call out for Shadow. I see him look down at me from above, calling out my name desperately. I hit the ground, landing on my right shoulder, breaking it. I scream in pain as I lean against the wall. Shadow climbs in and approaches me, using a flashlight he had brought with him to look for me. When he finds me, he helps me up.
"Shadow, my right shoulder is broken. It hurts so much." I wince as he lightly touches my injury.
"I told you it wasn't safe to be here! We have to get out of here and get you some help." He shines his flashlight around. Apparently we had found his old laboratory. Some of his sciencey stuff was still around. We walk in, looking around cautiously. Then we head into what seems to have been a main lobby of some sort. Suddenly, we hear a loud crash. We look around, nervousness creeping in. Shadow gently pushes me to get behind him. He holds his arm out defensively with intentions to protect me from whatever may be here. Out of the darkness steps Metal Sonic. I gasp in surprise.
"Metal? I didn't know you were still alive!"
"Dr. Robotnic repaired me after our battle Sonic the Hedgehog. He gave me some improvements." He flexes his claw-like fingers threateningly. Shadow starts to back up slowly, pushing me back. Metal must've noticed that I was injured. He takes advantage and charges at us. Shadow turns to face me and pushes me to the side. I land on my left shoulder and when I turn to face them I see Shadow wrestling with Metal.
"Sonic run! I'll hold him off!"
"What?! I can't leave you behind!"
"You can't fight with your broken shoulder! Just get out of here and get help!" Before I could respond, Metal takes a syringe filled with a strange fluid and shoves it into Shadows neck. My eyes widen and I call out to him. Before Metal drags him off, he calls out to me.
"Sonic, run! Go get help now!" Metal hits him in the head and he passes out.
"SHADOW!!' Metal drags him into another room and closes the entryway. Instinct tells me to go after him, but I know that I would be more of a burden. I wouldn't be able to fight properly with my injury. I grab Shadow's flashlight that he left behind and I find an exit. The way that I fell down has little ledges in the walls that I can use to climb up. When I get out, I run as fast as possible to Tails' house.
