Amber couldn't hold back any longer. Baron Leon asked her if she had another choice and she said no. The tears came rolling down her cheeks and she began to cry.

She walked over to the window and all the eyes in the room widened when she whistled a long, shrill note and jumped out the window.

She felt the gravity take over and she was falling. She found herself cradled in a pair of strong arms an gently set down.

"Thanks, George!" Amber said, her face buried in the tall guard's chest.

"My pleasure, Amber. Are you alright?" He asked. A couple days ago, Amber had asked George, her friend that was a couple years older than her to be stationed at the guard post under the Baron's tower window. She asked that if everything went wrong, which it did, he would listen for a high pitched whistle and prepare to catch her.

"I'm fine, it was only a twenty foot drop!" she said sarcastically. It never looked that big before.

"Oh, well I'm sorry. What went wrong?" He asked.

"I wasn't accepted for any of my choices!" she choked, tears filling her eyes again. George hugged her tightly and told her she would figure something out. After her tears stopped, she said good bye and ran home.

Amber almost opened the door and walked inside, but realized that she was not ready to face her father yet. Then she remembered, The tree! Thats the perfect place! She crept off the porch and began running toward the forest. When Tristan, Kristen, and Amber were young they found a large tree in the forest near her house. They had used it as a secret base ever since.

She raced through the forest and began climbing the familiar branches. She climbed up as high as she could. None of her other friends could make it this far up, so she was safe.

A few minutes later, Tristan and Kristen came running to the tree and searched for her. Luckily, the sun was at an angle so they couldn't see her. They left after they had triple-checked the area and were sure she wasn't there. A couple hours passed.

"It's Beautiful, isn't it?" a strange voice said behind her. Amber whirled around and saw a woman in a dark brown hooded vest and leggings sitting on a the tree next to hers. The stranger got up and jumped over to the branch next to Amber and sat down.

"Hi. I'm Nicole!" the hooded woman said. She pushed her hood back to reveal her face. She had blue eyes and short blonde hair. Nicole held out her hand to Amber, who was completely dumbfounded. "Um, Amber?" Nicole waved her hand in front of her face.

"Oh! I'm sorry!" She shook Nicole's hand, then froze, "Wait, how do you know my name?" Amber asked.

"We have been watching you for some time now, you know, testing your skills and such." Nicole said proudly.

"Watching me?! Who? Where? And for how long?!" She panicked.

"Calm down! I'm From The Royal Mages. Sorry, I forgot to tell you that." Nicole said, standing up proudly.

"R-royal M-mages?!" Amber said even more confused and frightened than before.

"Yeah! It's awesome! I've learned so many cool spells! I can see you already know a couple as well." She said, excited.

"Oh, my father taught me those for self defense." she stated.

"Wow! Your dad is awesome!" Nicole said.

"He's just a merchant, Nicole." Amber said.

"Well, he is really smart! He learned those spells so he could defend himself if he got attacked on the road or something, right?" Nicole said, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

"No, he is a local merchant. He's just extremely overprotective." Amber laughed.

"Oh, ha!" Nicole laughed also,"So... I should probably tell you why I came here." She paused, unsure of how to word it."Would you like to join The Royal Mages? You would have an older mage to teach you how things work and train you to be a strong mage. It's so much fun! I'm almost done with my training!" Nicole accidentally got sidetracked.

"Well, it looks like I have nowhere else to go... Let me talk to my dad first. Can you come see me tomorrow?" Amber said.

"Sure! I'll wait on your porch!" Nicole said. She is really excited about this, Amber thought.
