Amber opened the door and braced herself for impact. A couple seconds later, her father slammed into her.
"Amber! Are you alright? Where have you been?! I was so worried! I thought you had died! Tristan told me you jumped out the window! The TOWER window! Do you have any broken bones? Bruises? Cuts? Scrapes? Any-
"DAD! I'm fine! George caught me. We arranged that if things went wrong that i would whistle a high note and jump. Then he would catch me." she explained to her panicking father.
"So that explains why you didn't scream." Tristan emerged from behind Mr. Clove.
"What are you doing here?!" she asked.
"Why wouldn't I be here?! I was worried! You weren't at the tree either!" he blushed.
"Yes, I was. You just didn't see me." she accused.
"What?! what were you doing?!" Tristan exclaimed.
"I was hiding, you idiot! What do you think I was doing? Knitting a sweater?!" Her father had stepped aside and backed away. "Anyways, I was up there for a couple hours, and then a girl, Nicole, a couple years older than us came over to me and started talking." She paused, taking a sip of the cider her father had given her.
"So, what did she say?" Mr. Clove curiously asked.
"She said that The Royal Mages have been watching me for a while and she asked if I wanted to join them." she said.
"The Royal Mages?!" Her father and Tristan said in unison.
"Yup. Pretty cool, right?" She said. They stared at her with their mouthes wide open. "Um, guys?"
"W-what did you say?" Her father stuttered.
"I said that I would talk with you. Nicole is coming tomorrow to see what my answer is." Amber said.
"Well, what are you going to do?" Tristan asked.
"I want to join The Royal Mages. Dad, what do you think?" She asked her father's opinion.
"I think you should do what you wish to." He said, smiling. Amber hugged him and ran off to her room.
"I have to pack!" she exclaimed.
"I'll go help her." Tristan said, following her.
The next day, Amber heard a knock on the front door.
"Nicole!" Amber greeted her with a smile and led her to a seat by the fire. Nicole looked around, observing her surroundings. She was sitting in one of the three chairs around a small, low table in front of the fire. Behind her was a table with four chairs and a counter with a sink and a pot of flowers. On the opposite side of the room, there was an open door leading to a hallway and beside that was a painting of a sailboat.
"This is a nice house you have, Amber!" Nicole complimented cheerfully.
"Hello. You are Nicole, I presume?" Mr. Clove walked out of the hallway.
"Yes! Nice to meet you, sir!" Nicole responded.
"Oh, no need to call me 'sir', you can call me Mr. Clover, or Bill if you prefer" he laughed.
"Dad, I thought you went to the market." Amber sat down.
"I did. I just got back a little bit ago." he said, sitting across from Nicole. Amber handed Nicole a glass of cider.
"Thank you!" Nicole said, taking a drink."So! What do you say? Do you wanna be a Royal Mage?" Nicole excitedly asked.
"Yes. I do." Amber replied with a bright smile. Nicole smiled and laughed.
"This is going to be so much fun!" Nicole squealed.
After Amber had said her goodbyes, the two girls had set off on their horses to the south. Nicole had brought an extra horse with her for Amber to ride. She also told stories of her training and gave Amber many tips. Nicole also demonstrated her favorite spells. She demonstrated Earth Platform, a spell that rose the caster up on a chunk of dirt that she was able to fly around on. She also showed Amber Make Tree, a spell where a tree was made in front of the caster. Nicole made a large tree with glittering green leaves and they raced up to the top.
After a long day of riding, they made it to a clearing in a forest where a bunch of tents were set up. Nicole led her inside and to the center of the camp.
"Ah, there she is!" An old voice called out. An old man stepped toward her from a table with a map. A tall man and an average looking woman followed him. "I am Grizzlik, leader of The Royal Mages."He announced. Grizzlik reached out his hand for Amber to shake. She took it and froze, shocked.
"HAHAHAaahahaahaha!" Grizzlik burst out laughing. "That look on people's faces never gets old! Hahaha!" The people began to gather around them. Amber realized what had happened. He was a lightning mage and he zapped her when their hands touched. "hehe... Alrighty! Now before anything else happens, you must choose your class!" Grizzlik led Amber to a smaller clearing where a circle of pedestals stood. He took her by the shoulders and shoved her to the center of the circle. He snapped his fingers and on the pedestals, different items formed. "Go on now, dear, choose your class!" he encouraged. Amber walked around to each if the pedestals. Air, Lightning, Earth, Light, Shadow, Water, Ice, and Fire. The people that followed them into the clearing stared at her with anticipation, watching her every move. She slowly walked toward Light, the stopped and turned to Air, She then came to a decision. She Walked toward the ice pedestal and picked up the magic ice crystal. She stiffened in pain and looked at her shoulder. A light blue swirl with a point on the top was appearing on her arm.
"And the winning class is....Ice!" Grizzlik announced. he walked toward her and touched the design. He smiled and led her to her own tent.
The next morning, Nicole woke her. Amber got up and walked with Nicole to the long table on one side of the camp. A couple women served everyone a plate with bread, fruit, and a mug of milk. The boy sitting next to Amber turned to her and introduced himself.
"Hello. I'm Michael! I'm an ice mage, so there is a slight possibility that you will be training with me! There aren't very many Ice mages around anymore, so you are pretty special!" Michael said, his blue eyes sparkling.
"Nice to meet you, Michael. I'm Amber."She politely responded.
"Where are you from?" He asked.
"I'm from Clonsmont." She said." Where are you from?"
"I'm from Tenalta! It's on the Western shore of Ebenmear!" He replied. Then one of the serving women whacked him on the head with a ladle and said,
"Less talking, more eating!"Michael shrugged an apology toward Amber and got back to his bread.
