Igloos in the Summer
You may ask how on Earth one simply manages to endorse an igloo in the beaming summer sun. In fact, it’s almost impossible, not one layer of snow nor a falling snowflake over the moonlit ambience. But, this summer was different. This was the summer of twenty-three year old Vanessa Pools.
Vanessa, the girl with the long abundant ginger curls, the girl with the smile that turned me on like nothing else, the girl who could break my heart in a second and fix it back up in ten. She was the girl who you would find indulged inside a book on the local park bench sipping a freshly made coffee from the Dead Roast Cafe.
The most recent book of, ‘The Only End is closed,' was sat parched inside her charitable palms, a book enduring the magical wizards and humble beavers in the attack to obtain the golden Pilgrim. (Not entirely my taste, but never the less, I still found her highly attractive).
I, the shorter, but cockier twenty year old twat,Rupert, always found the time for Vanessa, no matter what plans I had set myself for the day, no matter who I decided to meet, and date Vanessa always had priority over everybody else. I couldn’t help myself, I was in love. In love with that bright smile obscured from the braces which glared so bright the thought of death shone past me each time.
Twelve Months before summer
Summer 2008, the year I first met Vanessa, the year I ditched each and every one of my friends after leaving high school, (yeah I saw them all scattered in the streets now and again with the odd ‘Alright’ ‘Hi’ ‘How’s life,’ but you could tell, no one really gave two fucks about me) I was that child who no one noticed at school, the child who people wouldn’t care if you showed up or not, the one who got pushed to one side at lunch, and the one who took life as it came.
I met Vanessa at the very end of my school life, in fact I had met her whilst travelling back home to Dartford from a job interview in Newcastle, yes Vanessa was in fact a Geordie I had this thing for ginger Geordies with braces and book fetishes back then, but I could of just been somewhat predisposition toward her whole ‘look,’ I wasn’t too sure. Anyhow, Vanessa sat there with her arms folded and her eyes wandering across towards the railway track, glued like I was missing something. Her eyes as wide as a sumo backside, mouth sorely open, and her trouncing foot tapping to the beat of her headphones.
I was not familiar with train stations nor Newcastle itself, I was only just able to make it to the job interview at the office block without getting myself trapped inside an unknown area of random dysfunctions of the brain. I did not know what it truly was about this girl, well she stood out, yes she was attractive, but something else. I couldn’t quite picture it.
Anyhow, I looked at my watch, 11:36am it said, the next train to Dartford was 11:54, that’s 15 minutes to make an impression and 3 minutes to get back to the train stand. I thought to myself - 15 minutes to try to grab a girl's attention that I may never meet again unless I do something. (It took me almost 4 minutes before doing anything, so technically I had 11 minutes). I quickly reached into my pocket, pulled out a pound coin and stood beside the bench she sat upon. I slowly dropped the coin next to her hoping to grab her attention, but she didn’t even leave a triggering on the muscle; well that was a waste of a good 3 minutes. I thought to myself, butnow I had to think, my brain empowered into a ballistic thought mode, I needed to grab her attention. I needed her name, so I could look her up online that way. My mind started drizzling with ideas, maybe steal her purse and check her bank card for details? – Too much to lose, skip my journey home, and get the same train as her? – Too creepy, pretend to have a panic attack and tell her I need mouth to mouth – I just ate garlic beforehand. I had nothing. With time coming to a shove, I checked my watch once more, 11:52am. I slowly shuddered across from the benched seating area where this highly attractive girl sat and walked up to the train stand.
The train Approached.
“Ex...Excuse me s…Sir; do you know if this train goes across to the Cro…Crossways?” A small voice had said whilst tapping the shoulder of my olive superhero T-shirt.
I hated answering people. I would always get worried in case I was wrong, but this time without any form of hesitation I speedily said, “Yes Madam, it’s the second from last stop, I am getting off there too.” I did not like making eye contact with people I didn’t know but after the words of “Thank you handsome” I kind of had to just this once, there she was! The ginger girl with the braces, stood right in front of me smiling, was this some sort of novelty joke? Did she just call me handsome? Can she see me?
The girl sat down on the opposite set of seats from me, pulled out her bag and grabbed a book and chocolate bar from it. “Care for a piece of chocolate my friend; I’m Vanessa, Vanessa Pools.”
I looked at her for a while biting my lower lip before I replied with a northern attempt of, “Well Hello Vanessa, I’m Rupert, King of Dartford the noble chocolate thief.” She laughed and handed across a piece of chocolate, before continuing to read her book, a book with no cover, no blurb, no spine, but still a book.
The train came to a stop.
“Mam, I’m here, I made it in one piece, this book, you’ll love it trust me!” Vanessa screamed down the phone whilst stepping down onto the platform off the train.
At that point I felt like stalking her, but I let her go continue the journey in her stride. With Vanessa strolling along into the right side cut and me waddling along straight ahead, I blew it. The girl I wanted to talk to so much, just gone from my sight, life, and into my hometown.
