Zane
“Earth calling to Zane" my friend and Beta Marcus is frantically waving his hands in front of my face. Pulling me from my thoughts, I growl in annoyance.
Concern written all over his face Marcus asks, “are you alright man? I’ve been calling you for ages and you’ve just been spaced out".
I’m finding I’m thinking about her more and more lately and I don’t know why.
It happened so long ago, I can't believe all of a sudden my feelings are just as raw as when she rejected.During my travels as a younger wolf I saw and heard things when it came to the mate bond.
Once you are rejected the first year is the most excruciating, but eventually the pain dissipates and you feel nothing for the other person.
That was true for a while, but for the past several months Remus my wolf has been stirring and I continue to dream about her every night.
Being my best friend, Marcus is the only person I have entrusted with the secret of who my mate was. I use to see pity in his eyes for me and it would piss me off.
I never wanted a mate at the time, so I had no right to feel sorry for myself.
But ever since, I’ve just never met anyone else who compares.Don’t get me wrong, I have tried and dated a few women. But something was always missing.
“Sorry Marcus, I just haven’t been sleeping well lately" I finally respond.
“all good man, you’re probably just stressed about the Gala next week" he says.
“yeah" I sigh, “that could be it".
“So anyway” Marcus continues, “we’ve now received all the RSVP's from the other packs and it looks like everyone will be attending”.
“Good" I say pleased, “that’s great news and how are preparations coming along?”.
“I just spoke with Chiquita the Event Planner earlier and she confirmed the decor, furniture and food are all on schedule and she doesn't foresee any hiccups" Marcus explains.
“Excellent” I say before I’m mind-linked by the leader of our perimeter soldiers.
“Alpha, we’ve had sightings of rogues close to our perimeter” Cedric informs me
“I’ll send some of the Warriors to check it, if there’s any further issues contact me" I mind-link back.
“What’s going on?” Marcus asks.
“Just a couple rogues on the border, I’ve sent some Warriors to check it out” I say unconcerned.
Rogues coming close to our borders isn’t unusual, our land is so big that some wolves loose their way.
I’m not too concerned by a couple, it’s the larger rogue packs that get me concerned. The larger ones are extremely vicious and dangerous.
We aren’t immune to the odd attack every now and then, but we train our men and women well, so we’re able to keep them at bay.“well I’ll go check it out just to be sure" Marcus says, getting up from his chair and exiting my office.
Marcus is a great Beta and like me takes his duty to this pack seriously.
As Marcus exits my younger sister Claire enters.
She smiles at me with knowing eyes, but doesn’t say anything straight away.
She just stares as If she knows something I don’t, shaking her head.
She asks “how are you?”I smile and say “I’m good Claire"
Her eyes soften “and the dreams?”
My eyes show surprise and she chuckles.
I can never figure out how she knows things without being told.
She’s always been intuitive, but sometimes I think it’s more than just intuition with Claire.
I don’t bother asking her how she knows about my dreams so I just tell her.
“they have been more persistent lately and I don’t understand why"All she says is “the Moon goddess always has a plan Zane, you just need to be patient".
I ponder Claire’s words for a minute and then Claire quietly gets up and leaves my office.
Strange girl, I laugh to myself and continue with the last of my work.
