After I finish my phone call with my father, I go back to reading a gossip magazine featuring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. I get lost in the magazine with the sun beating down on me. I hear my name being called, I look up and it is my co-worker Shelly. "Hey what part of the ER are you working today?" Shelly asks. "I'm working trauma", I say. Shelly lets me know that she will be in pediatrics in case I want to go to break with her later. As Shelly walks off, she turns around and gives a little wave, "See ya around Kenz", she says. No one calls me that but Shelly, she knows I don't like it, but it has grown on me.
My cellphone alarm goes off, time for me to go back in. The lunch break went by so fast but at least half my shift is over. I walk back into the ER and head to the break room to put my stuff away. I unlock my combination lock, open the locker and put my stuff away. I head out to the nurses station and sit at the computer. I chat with some of my co-workers, not that we friends, but we are friendly and they are someone to talk to. I mainly keep to myself besides a select few, Shelly included. As I am charting, I hear "Trauma Level 1", being announced over head.
As i jump out of my seat, I head for the back entrance where the ambulances pull up to drop off patients. When I get there the trauma team is waiting. I grab a yellow gown and gloves while waiting for the ambulance. I see Alex waiting on the wall to my left, I go over there and ask, "Hey, do you know what is coming in?". He looks at me all calm and says, "A gunshot wound, the guy lost a lot of blood and his pressures are tanking", he tells me. The ambulance arrives and backs up to the entrance, the doors fly open and the paramedic starts rattling off what is going on. As we lower the gurney to the ground, we rush him in through the sliding glass doors and down the hall to trauma room 2 on the left. I notice that the paramedic who I think is named Brad, he continues to watch me and smile. He makes me feel a little uncomfortable but I push those thoughts out of my mind and get working on the gunshot victim.
Dr. Reinbold the trauma doctor on, starts yelling out orders. "Get more fluids running, We need another Iv, 2 units of packed red blood cells and get some pressers on board to get that blood pressure stabilized", he says while removing a bullet from his left shoulder and right chest. I hurry up and place a 18 gage iv into his antecubital. I start the pressers and get them infusing, while Alex gets the blood going. I like working traumas, it really gets my adrenaline pumping. The patient is unconscious but he is stable now. Dr. Reinbold is really a great trauma surgeon and I learn so much from him every time he is on.
After assisting in stabilizing the patient, I remove my bloody gown, gloves and head to the nursing station. The nursing station is behind double doors that lead to the front lobby. I can see some of the front lobby by looking through the triage window that is across from the nursing station. Ten minutes into charting , I hear some commotion in the lobby. I look over through the triage window and see about five guys. They all have that rough around the edges look with tattoos and messy hair. A couple of them have beards. The one in the center is the one making all the commotion. I can hear him all the way back here. I really don't want to have to call a code green which will alert security we have a problem. I decide to go out there, I walk up to the group of men and ask, " Hi, it looks like we are having an issue out here. Is there something I can help you with", I say with a smile trying to lighten the mood. He looks at me with dark blue eyes, pushes his messy hair back and points and looks at my name badge, " McKenzie, My friend got brought in here with a gunshot wound and this bitch here at the desk said she will not give me any information", his eyes glaring at her. As I attempt to diffuse the situation and explain to him that it is the law and we can not disclose any medical information without consent. I continue to explain that the receptionist is only following policies that are in place.
He looks over at his 4 other buddies and starts yelling, " are you fucking kidding me, my friend has been shot and we have no idea how he is and you will not give us information." He slams his fists on the counter in front of him while he continues to cuss and make a scene. I look at him, he must be in his late 20's and say, " You need to calm down, I will call security and you will be removed from the hospital. I don't want to do that but I can't have you acting like this here". He looks at me and laughs, "Do you seriously think I am afraid of some rent a cop", he says with a smirk on his face. His buddy with the beard, places his hand on his shoulder and says," Miller, dude you need to chill, we don't need trouble". I can see how upset this guy is getting and I need to figure out this situation fast before it escalates even further. I ask if his friend has a wife, we can only give out health protected information to his significant other and I have a feeling that she may not know that he is here.
The other guys and him walk toward some empty chairs in the lobby. I keep a close eye on them after the scene they made. I watch the one who was called "Miller", grab his phone out of his jean pocket and dials. I can't hear the conversation but after he hangs up, he looks at me and laughs with a obnoxious grin. This guy really is getting under my skin, the way he acts and then looks at me like it is my fault. I don't even know him yet he is so irritating.
I decide to chart at the triage computers so I can keep a better eye on the trouble maker in the lobby. I am glad the ER is slow today as I am busy babysitting this jerk, to make sure he doesn't cause anymore of a scene. I don't know who he thinks he is, coming in here acting like he can do what he wants. Fifteen minutes pass and I see this woman who comes to the front desk asking for information on her husband who was brought in for a gunshot wound. The woman is dressed in tight ripped black jeans and a black tank top with her hair pulled up in a messy pony tail. She has to be in her late 20's as well. As I am overhearing the conversation between the woman and receptionist, I watch the lobby and see the guys looking directly at this woman. After her information was verified, she received the pin and room number of where he is located. I hear the receptionist give her information on how to get to the ICU. I see the woman walk over to the lobby and hand Miller the pin card. I thought she was going to go to the elevators but she walks right out the front door without even checking on her husband.
The group of guys walk by the triage desk and head to the elevator. As I watch them walk away, I see Miller turn his head, runs his hand through his hair and looks at me with his dark blue eyes a devilish grin. As they step onto the elevator, he continues to stare at me until the doors close and break our eye contact. I can't stop thinking about the way he acted and how rude he was to me. I was just doing my job and unlike him I follow rules. I finish the last 3 hours of my shift and I am glad that it went by fast. I go to the break room and grab my stuff and head to the time clock that is on the wall around the corner of the elevator. Of course the elevator would open and those 5 guys would be getting out. The guys are loud and acting foolish and I continue to walk away. The one they call Miller, runs up to me as I walk through the front entrance doors to leave. "Hey, you really didn't have to be so rude to me, all I was doing was asking about my friend who is more like my brother", he says so innocently. Does he really think I don't remember how he was acting earlier? "Excuse me, are you serious right now? I was doing my job, following the law and you come in here acting like some jerk of a guy who always gets his way no matter what", I say in a hard tone. This guy gets under my skin, I normally do not argue with strangers but his guy with his dark blue eyes and messy dark hair is on my nerves.
I walk as fast as I can to the parking lot and get in my car. What a day today has turned into, as I drive home all I can think about is that tall guy with dark blue eyes, tattoos and messy hair. His eyes staring directly at me while he runs his hands though his hair with an angry attitude. I normally don't dwell on guys, I don't have time for it. Yet here I am driving home with his dark blue eyes engraved into my mind.
