Her long chestnut hair followed the uneven winds rythm. As she gazed around the new area where she lived her eyes all of a sudden landed on a boy hidden away in the darkness of the apartment building. His red and black checkered shirt matched incredibly well with the bricks the house was made of. He saw her as well. He scurried away further into the dark alley way and tried to be as small as possible. Which was pointless since she already had seen him. Walking accross a street while the lamp showed red a few drivers honked with irritation and waited for the "stupid idiot" to cross the street. Ignoring the now pissed drivers she continued on towards the little boy. How old could he possibly be? Six? Seven? Only God could tell. She finally reached his little hide-out and found the little boy scared and awfully nervous.
"Hi! My name is Kim... have you lost your parents" she asked the boy who in return shook his head. This little act confused her. A tiny boy in the back of a dark alley who is alone and knows that his parents won't go back for him? How could someone do that to their own child?"Do you have a name", Kim asked. Again the boy shook his head. What was she supposed to do now? Leave a supposedly homeless child in a dark alley? She looked at the child who sat in front of her. His clothes were dirty and ripped all over, suggesting that he had been alone for a long time. She decided that no child deserved a life like this.
"Is there a name that you like", she asked trying to get to boy to speak. If he could speak that is. This time he nodded and a smile surfaced on his tiny face.
"Tom", he said happily. She nodded.
"Perfect then your name is now Tom, and Tom", she paused and looked around, " do you want to live with me?". As soon as the sentence left her lips she was sure that this was the right decision. The boy got quiet and looked like he thought about his possibilities.
"D... do". Kim listened making sure to hear every word that the tiny boy spoke. "H...a...ve pan...cakes" he asked like it was some sort of rare delicacy. Kim's eyes widened.
"So... you'll move in with me if I'll give you pancakes" she asked looking at Tom. He nodded slowly as if he was certain that the thing he had asked of her was impossible. "Deal". Tom's eyes widened and all of a sudden he stood up letting out a few confused gasps now and then.
"Are... you sure... Ms. Kim" he asked.
"Please Tom call me Kim, and yes we can have pancakes for breakfast whenever you want, sweetie", she gave him a reassuring smile. He nodded for himself and reached for her hand.
"Are you my... mommy now", he asked and looked at her. She was left dumbfounded. For some people that question might've sounded outrageous. But for her it sounded like a lost boy trying to find a safe place to call home.
"Yea, Tom! I am your new mommy and I'll promise to never let you go. I'll make you pancakes as soon as we got the ingredients we need". Tom's eyes lit up, smiled and nodded for himself.
"I love you mommy".
"I love you too, sweetie", Kim said. And she meant it.
