Something New - A Phan Oneshot

Summary: Shy!Phil tries to find the courage to ask FootballPlayer!Dan to homecoming.

Genre: (American) High school AU

Word Count: 1158 (with description)

It was the beginning of Dan and Phil's Junior Year. Dan was a popular football player and Phil was a shy nerd. Phil was taking so many other AP and Honors classes that he decided to take normal bio to give himself a break. Dan struggled in his science class last year and was lucky to even be taking 'normal' bio. They ended up in the same class and the teacher assiged them seats right next to eachother. Phil couldn't believe it, he had always crushed on Dan from afar but now he got to sit next to him everyday.

Phil wanted to tell his tumblr followers about the cutie he sat next to. He needed a code name. A code name made everything sound cool. Dan was built like a bear, Phil thought. Bear, aww it was cute but manly at the same time.

the cutest boy just sat next to me in bio. his names bear. not really. he plays football.

 #unf #love me

Not even five minutes later his followers were responding

i ship it!

ask him out!

do i see a potential hoco date?

Hoco. That message stuck to Phil for weeks. He would fantasize different ways to ask him. He even googled it once. His favorite was a teddy bear with a t-shirt that said homecoming on it because of his nickname for Dan.

Although Phil sat next to Dan in Biology everyday, he never managed to gather the courage to initiate a conversation with the intimidating boy. Phil was too shy and due to the fact that they had Bio first period, Dan was only ever barely awake. Phil knew Dan struggled in the class.

One day, after all the students had sat down, the teacher passed back their tests that they had taken a few days before. He handed Phil's back and congratulated him. His paper showed that he had gotten a 98%.

Not bad, Lester, he thought to himself. God, he was such a dork.

"Uh, Phil? Right?" his desk mate interrupted him from his own thoughts. Phil couldn't tell if he was crushed or delighted. It had been a month and he wasn't sure of his name? The thought made him feel insecure, but the butterflies that arose in his stomach after hearing his name roll off of Dan's lips were enough to make him wave it off.

"Yeah! How did you do on the test?" Phil asked, then cringed at his enthusiasm.

"Uh ... Well, not good. I need to keep my GPA up to play football. Do you think that maybe, uh, you could help me?" Dan asked, quickly and nervously. He was blushing and looking at the floor. Phil's heart nearly popped out of his chest. The cutest boy in school needed Phil's help.

"Of course! I mean, uh, I guess. We could meet at Starbucks after school and I could tutor you?" Phil replied, then thought, Get it together, Lester! Phil had a bad habit of calling himself by his last name in his head. It made him feel cool.

"Sounds good. I have practice until 4:00, so I can probably meet you at, like, 4:30?"

Guess who has a date with Bear tonight?!1!?

Again, his followers got excited

Ask him! Ask him!

My feels!

You should write homecoming on the coffee cup!!!!111!!1

Phil blushed at the idea of asking Dan to homecoming with a Starbucks drink. As cheesey and uncreative as it seemed, Phil could not find it in himself to deny the fact that it was heart-wrenchingly adorable.

Phil got to the coffee shop before Dan did. He sat at an empty table and got his books out. When Dan finally did get there he pretended he didn't notice until he sat down next to him. This surprised Phil, he thought the other boy would sit across from him. They greeted each other and got to work without even getting coffee. It was enough for Phil, all he wanted was to be close to Dan.

After an hour and a half of Phil repeatedly explaining Biology to Dan and Dan simply not understanding it they decided to take a break.

"I'm sorry. I really truly am. You took time out of your day to help me and I'm stupid and I'll never get it," Dan said. Phil was clueless when it came to boys but even he could tell Dan needed a pick me up.

"Oh shut up. You're very smart and I have nothing better to do. I'll go get us some coffee." Phil giggled. He was bouncing off the walls, he had practically flirted with his crush for a hour and Dan even flirted back more often than not.

The line was quite long so Phil decided to check tumblr from his phone. He remembered the Starbucks Homecoming Proposal.

He would never say yes, Phil tried to discourage himself and went back to mobile blogging. Before he knew it, he was next in line to order his coffee.

"Hi! What can I get for you today?" asked the very chipper barista.

"Uh, can I have two caramel macchiatos, please?" Phil had forgotten to ask Dan what he wanted, and figured that he couldn't go wrong with his favorite drink.

"Sure thing! Names, please?" responded the barista. Phil looked at her name tag, Cindy.

"Ones for Phil and the other is for... actually, can you write homecoming with a question mark on the other?" Phil lowered his voice so Dan wouldn't hear. What had he just done? Dan would never say yes. Phil's sudden burst of courage had faded but it was too late.

The whole Starbucks team smiled and 'awwed' as Phil finished paying for the drinks.

Phil took several deep breaths as he walked back to their table. His heart rate sped up even as he tried to calm himself down. Whats the worst that could happen? He could say no?

"Err, here you go." Phil handed Dan his drink and held his breath.

"Mmmh, caramel macchiatos, my favorite," Dan said without even looking at the proposal. Phil let out an enraged sigh. He went through all the trouble and Dan wasn't even going to look at it? No, he was too far in now. He looked back at the baristas, they were all watching and smiling. Cindy even gave Phil a thumbs up.

"Um. Dan? You might want to check the cup? I don't know just to, er, make sure-" Phil was cut off suddenly by an excited voice.

"Phil? Did you write this? I would love to go to homecoming with you!" Dan squeeked. Dan had the warmest smile on his face and got up to hug Phil.

"Yes!" Phil cheered and the whole coffee shop cheered with him. This was the start of something new.
