Chapter 3
We were sitting in the car enjoying the ice cream in this hot sunny day.
Salma was quiet, looking out the window. I didn't question her because I knew that she'd start speaking soon.
"You know there was a time when I looked up to her. She seemed like a perfect girl. I even told mama that she could be a good match for Ibrahim. Even Ibrahim had taken a liking to her. I wonder what went wrong after his death". Tears pooled in her eyes. I silently listened to her while she poured her heart out.
"Why can't I live like the other girls? I don't care about what people are gonna say about me. I wanna live my life while I can"
"Salma, sometimes you should live your life to the fullest but you shouldn't forget about the ones who care about you".
"What do you mean?"
"Well as you know that, aunty Yasmeen raised you and Ibrahim as a single parent. When you go out and do something wrong, people won't point a finger at you. Or even if they do, they'll still blame aunty for not raising you well enough".
"But it's not her fault." She said frowning.
"It isn't, but we live in a very crooked society. People will have many things to say like Yasmeen couldn't raise her daughter well or it's because Salma didn't live under the shadow of a father that she is so spoiled, etc".
"Crooked, surely it is." With that she went silent.
"Okay listen, dad's planning to have a little gathering at his place so I want you to come there with aunty".
"But I'm also-"
"I know I know, you can also bring Alisha with you because it's gonna get boring for you. I need you there though". She smiled and for a moment everything else was blurred out.
