When the night was getting later and later, the boys got quieter. Everybody had been drinking quite a lot at this point and Will was tired. He sank into the couch and watched as James emptied his beer bottle right next to him, his shoulders pressed into the soft pillows. Will felt the alcohol rushing through his whole body and he decided that he had have enough.
They talked about all nonsense you could think of, nothing really important, but it still made Will chuckle a little bit. The booze making him losen up.
The balcony door was open and a breath of wind filled the room with a cold breeze. Will shuddered and looked over to see who had the great idea to open up the door in the first place. In the dark of the balcony Will recognized the slim silhouette. It was Alex, standing only with his bright hoodie in the cold, his arms on the railing. Between his lips stuck a cigarette, half smoked. His eyes where fixated on an uncertain spot far on the night sky. Alex looked dreamy and Will would have given everything to know what Alex was thinking about right now.
Will's body was heavy from the night out but he finally stood up and made his way to his best friend. Alex didn't notice him right away and Will almost felt bad for disturbing Alex.
Alex finished his cigarette with one last drag and put it out on the ashtray next to him. He didn't look over to Will and kept his gaze in the starry sky. "Hey, what's up?" Alex mumbled.
Will leant against the railing, his back towards the cold metal, his eyes on the shorter boy in front of him. "Nothing, really. I'm pretty tired so I thought a breath of fresh air would be helpful."
Alex just nodded but didn't say anything. Will saw how he shivered slightly under his sweater. The silence between them was awkward and Will wanted to break it but felt a little helpless not knowing what to say.
"Didn't know you smoked on a regular basis now." Alex looked up to him now with an indefinable look in his eyes. "Bad habit, I know." Was all he said, shrugging his shoulders to end the conversation there.
Will gave up. Maybe Alex wasn't really in the mood to talk right now. It happened a lot lately but he didn't want to put pressure on his friend. It was more than okay to feel like this sometimes. Will definitively understood him there, but it made him sad. He loved spending time with Alex and he had to remind himself that it wasn't something personal towards him when Alex pushed him away like this sometimes.
Will softly patted Alex' shoulder, just to show him, that he was there when Alex needed someone to talk and decided to make his way back inside to leave his friend in peace.
James laughed out loud about something George just said, but Will didn't quite catch about what. He let them be and decided to call it a day and go to sleep. He wasn't in the mood to joke around anyway.
Later, while he lied in bed and everything around him was black Will felt sober again, despite drinking so much. He heard the other boys laughing. He heard Alex high voice saying something he couldn't figure out. Will rolled over and dragged his bedcover above his shoulders, he pressed his face deep in the soft fabric and decided not to over think about that there where things in his head he was afraid of. Thoughts that crept upon him when he couldn't sleep. Thoughts that where dangerous. Thoughts he shouldn't have.
So he forced them away and felt asleep but not after countless minutes.
--
Of course Will woke up with a headache. Normally he was a practiced drinker, but yesterday he got to much, lost control over how much he really had in the end. Never again, he swore silently to himself, knowing that he never kept his promise.
Will struggled out of the tangled blanket and looked around. He lay on a mattress in George's chaotic room. Said person, still was deep asleep in the bed next to him, slightly snoring.
Will took a deep breath and searched for his phone. The neon screen told him that it was 9am. Why did he have to wake up that early?
He knew he couldn't go back to sleep now that he was already awake. So he decided to get himself a morning coffee. When he went into the kitchen Will came across a disheveled looking Alex. The boy sat on the counter, on his lap a bowl of cereals. He was looking on his phone so he didn't noticed Will right away. Will started the coffee machine and Alex looked up thanks to the loud noise the machine made.
"Oh, morning Will. How did you sleep?" Will grabbed a mug and put it under the machine. Pressing a random button, hoping he would get a decent coffee out of it.
"Good, I guess. I didn't even heard George going to sleep. Did you guys stay awake long after me?" The sweet bitter smell of coffee filled the small kitchen and Will's headache seamed to vanish more and more.
Alex chewed on a spoonful of cornflakes before he answered. "No, not really. You didn't miss anything."
Will took a few sips of his fresh and hot coffee. "Did you know that George is a heavy snorer?"
Alex chuckled. "Yes, after all this years living with him I did notice. You can sleep in my room the next time, if you want."
Will ran his hand through his hair; it was completely ruffled from his sleep anyway.
"I'll keep that in mind for the next time." He kept his gaze on Alex. His bed hair was all over his head but he didn't look tired. Will was fascinated by the way how young Alex looked sometimes. In his oversized Shirt and the colorful shorts. It's not like Alex acted childish all the time but maybe it was just this innocent aura he had.
Will buried his face in his warm mug and took a long sip before he could finish his thought.
