Dusted

Under the heavy influence of a midnight haze

I feel groggy and confused; I feel kinda dazed

Inhaling the soupy mist fills my lungs and blood

With a potent portent of what is to come...

Then just as I am ready to puke

A stranger pulls up as if by fluke

He hails me down like he knows me so well

I sidle up to his side as if under a spell...

"Open wide," he says, "this party is about to begin

...

I need a sample of your cells to test for your sins

...

Hear my voice and command, you really need to show

...

Your true colours and the stains of living low

...

I'm having you dusted."

He didn't offer a choice

With his stentorian voice

All I could do was obey

So silently, I prayed

That once he completed his task

I could escape and make a dash,

Feel the sun's rays on my back

And forget about all the love I lacked...

I have been dusted.

It's been so long that I have felt free

...

To recall my youth and times carefree

...

I welcome the new scent and light of the day

...

When I can breathe easy and move on my way

...

No more being dusted.

No more living in the dark

No more having to survive

On the bench in the park.

Do you know how I've adjusted

To all that life's thrown at me?

I've had to hit the pavement

Beg, borrow, breakdown and plead for mercy.

I was dusted.
