Three teenagers are walking along the empty streets. There aren't the usual loud car engines or horns or the sounds of people speaking. For any regular citizen, seeing the usually busy and loud street so quiet would be weird or even scary.
But for the three teenagers that was a routine - escaping from their houses during the night to go and draw graffiti under a bridge or on the street.
The teenagers in question are Ashton Miles,or Maffy as he was known in the graffiti community, Vivian Otto or Drag7 and Eric Williams or Qura. These teenagers were all nineteen, all studying in the Oak Lake High School. Each night ever since they were fifteen, they would go outside and paint. Paint everywhere. It was their passion, the meaning of their lives.
"Yo,Ash."
Ashton turns around to face Vivian.
"Pass me the paint."
Ashton does. Vivian catches the heavy bag seemingly effortlessly. Then, she puts in on the ground and kneels next to it,unzipping it.
"How many do we got?" Asks Eric.
"Thirty-three"
"Awesome. What are we paintin'?
Vivian looks at Eric, then at Ashton.
"You decide,quiet dude!"
Ashton sighs. He hates being called "quiet dude". And then again, that's what he is. He had always been much quieter then most. Many people interpret it as being introverted or shy. But Ashton is neither of those. No. He just doesn't want to say useless, meaningless stuff like most people. But the meaningful things are on the walls of the city. The meaningful things Ashton says with his drawings, with his imagination. He doesn't need words. He needs spray.
Instead of replying, Ashton goes to the backside of a store, takes the blue spray from the bag, shakes it and starts painting.
"Ash,dude,c'mon! Tell us what we are doing so we could help you!" Eric protests behind him.
Ashton turns around.
"Angel." He replies quickly, turning around again.
"Are you serious? An angel?! That's for small children,Ash." Vivian says.
A reply doesn't follow. Without saying another word, both Vivian and Eric get next to Ashton and start painting.
It's like they could understand each other without using words. It has always been that way. Ever since they were little. Ashton never spoke much and Vivian and Eric spoke way too much, never really watching their language. Eric and Vivian would protect Ashton from the bullies and he would remind them when they should keep quiet.
That night, the three members of the GroundBreak crew drew for five hours.
