Piper loved her boyfriend, as she was supposed to.

Why shouldn’t she? Jason was tan, tall, conventionally attractive, and blonde. But when they kissed, she never felt anything more than slimy lips touching hers. She loved him, yes, but not like that. Not when there were prettier girls on the Argo II.

Piper was afraid to love a girl- words of “dyke” and “gross lesbo” still echoing in her head from the halls of her old school. So when the most attractive boy in the school asked her out, she’d said yes. Everyone stopped calling her names- but being with Jason hadn’t taken away her feelings for girls. Her mind kept wandering to cute faces and pretty eyes whenever she was with Jason.

She couldn’t take it any longer—kissing Jason, holding hands… it never felt right. All the girls in the Aphrodite cabin said she was lucky to have him - he was the hottest boy at camp, he was sweet, considerate, and a good fighter…

So when Jason told Piper that he loved her, she mindlessly repeated the words, like they were dry and hollow and dead. It wasn’t a total lie, exactly—she loved him like a brother, not like a boyfriend.

“Is everything OK, Pipes?” asked Jason.

“Yeah, I guess. I’m feeling a little sick.” answered Piper.

Piper felt like she had swallowed a bowling ball of lies. This was it- she had to stop pretending. Jason wasn’t the person she wanted.

Piper was going to tell Hazel Levesque she loved her.
