Mark;
Cerebral Hypoxia ─ a lack of the amount of oxygen reaching the brain.
Currently what the young Canadian boy was suffering from. In all honesty, this is not what he imagined dying to be like. Especially since not one person could hear his cries for help over the church choir.
Which brings to how he got here in this moment and why there was a lack of oxygen reaching him. Mark couldn't tell you exactly why the other kids felt this way.
Honestly, he went to a Catholic school, prayed every day, was involved in almost everything, and even was 2nd place in all high scores for the school. Only because Kun was always 1st and that man was an absolute genius that Mark could only ever dream of being.
He also didn't think he was ugly, his mother used to tell him that he was too pretty to be a boy and maybe he should have been born a girl. Maybe it was because he was poor and at the school on a scholarship, or because he was Canadian and didn't know how to act like a mainland Asian.
But now, here he was. Drowning and confused on what he did so wrong that the kids thought it was funny enough to play such a cruel joke on him. The boys were way bigger than him, pushing his head under the pool's water while the girls searched for the button that'd close over the top and lock him inside the cold and freezing water.
All water in his lungs doesn't only lead to drowing, but also to Hypothermia ─ caused when the body isn't able to produce heat faster than it gets cold. Being smart wasn't so good if the knowledge was just going to be wasted with death.
It was actually pretty pitiful. The Canadian kid getting drowned by the Korean kids and even watched by that one Chinese exchange student who hardly said anything. Mark couldn't help but think that, maybe, just maybe if he hadn't of pursued studying in Korea, he could have been popular back in his own hometown of Vancouver.
Even when facing death, Mark still thinks about facts. Like how it can take anywhere between 30-80 seconds for the brain to fall unconscious after oxygen deprivation, but when drowning, you can only struggle between 20-60 seconds before you tire out and get submerged by the water. 3-4 minutes later, death may occur. Fun. Really, Mark just wished he was back in the cafeteria with his best friend Yeri having some watermelon.
He crashed and struggled against the surface and the hands that held him down, screaming over the chlorine intoxicated water filling his lungs, causing him to gurgle and choke. The sound of a machine caught his attention, which ended in him struggling harder because as it turned out, one of the girls had found the button and the pool was finally closing it's lid over the water surface.
"Y'know, you really are a fucking loser." Ouch. If Mark wasn't drowing right now, he'd of actually felt that stab to the chest.
Simon, a boy who took the game Simon Says to a whole new level. Pure hell floated around the elder's eyes and Mark was actually afraid and terrified to look right into them. He wondered sometimes on who the hell thought it was a good idea to let a demon into a Catholic school.
His body was slowing down, tiring out. 40 seconds up, possibly 20 more before Mark is unable to keep trying to fight back. Fortunately, yet unfortunately, the top was finally coming over his flailing arms. Last thing he was able to see was Simon's smiling face as the top completely closed over his head and locked him into the pool.
Tick, tick, tock. A mental clock went through Mark's mind. Seconds to minutes, before Mark knew it, 10 minutes had passed since the other kids left Mark locked in the pool. The water was cold and his whole body was beginning to ache and tire from his constant need to stay afloat to breathe under the few inches provided.
His small knuckles red enough to prove there'd be a bruise soon, he slammed them against the top too much in hopes someone, anyone at all would hear. It was so silent that Mark couldn't even hear his own whimpers and cries for someone to let him out.
More time passed and Mark couldn't tell if it was late or early anymore, couldn't even feel his own legs and hands. The water was too cold and the Hypothermia was setting in now. He probably already looked dead, like a zombie as he continued weakly hitting his hands against the top of the pool.
Pale lips slowly turning a shade of purple and blue while his eyes stung red from the chlorine in them. This joke had gone too far, Simon really wanted him dead this time apparently, and not one other person seemed to care enough to question where Mark had gone. He couldn't understand why everyone hated him as much as they did, especially since he did everything asked of him.
On the ending verge of losing consciousness, Mark released one last cry and hit to the top. Praying to the man upstairs that this was just a dream and that he'd be fine once he waked up. That everything would have been just another nightmare and he would have nothing to worry about.
So in and out of consciousness, Mark's body began to sink below the few inches that allowed him to breathe, down below the surface of the water into submergence. Unable to witness the top being opened, or the hands frantically reaching for him after jumping into the water.
