Chapter 7: Passing the Test

[(Y/N's POV]

I had decided on my choice. I would ask Blake to be my partner. I walked over and smiled politely.

Me: "Blake, would you mind being my partner for this test?"

She gave me a shy smile and nodded.

Ruby: "But I was-"

Blake: "Ruby. He chose me."

I was slightly surprised, Blake seemed like the shy type, I didn't expect her to actually say anything. Ruby scowled at her and pouted.

Ruby: "Fine..."

As Blake and I walked away I gave her a worried look.

Me: "I'm dearly sorry if I caused a problem with your team."

Blake jumped.

Blake: "O-Oh no, it's fine! She was just disappointed I'm sure."

I nodded.

Me: "I'll have to make it up to her."

Blake: "We should think of a strategy now. Do you have any ideas?"

I thought for a moment, keeping Cody's tips in mind I believe I came up with a decent plan. After working with Blake we refined the plan into a perfect strategy. I was confident we would be able to beat him. Luckily we had time to watch fight after fight, however every pair lost. Cody seemed to adapt to each of his opponents, quickly learning their strengths and weaknesses. I also saw that he would purposely leave himself open to lure one of the two people in, then immediately take them down. And as soon as it was a one on one fight it was over. Blake and I would have to work together and be weary of every move he makes. As the next pair came up Cody sighed and pulled something from his jacket pocket... was that a pack of cigarettes? He plucked one from the pack then lit it with his flames. He seemed more confident then usual with this one. The two students weren't anyone I knew, the female had a bow and the male had a two handed sword. It seemed like a good combination, a long range fighter and close range damage dealer. What made this one seem easier to him?

Cody: "Begin."

The one with the bow fired an arrow directly at Cody's chest, but he simply stepped out of the way while flicking the ash off his cigarette. The male took this time to charge at the teacher raising his sword high. Cody quickly formed a one handed short sword in his right hand and waited until the blade was a few inches from his head. Cody moved to the side then quickly brought the sword mere inches from the male's face. The student stumbled back and lost his balance, falling onto his back. From there it ended quickly. Cody had taken out the close range fighter and quickly got into the female student's range. They didn't land a single hit. Their teamwork was horrible honestly. Maybe that's why he was confident.

Cody: "Well after that snooze fest it's time for an interesting one. Blake and (Y/N), come on."

We've had time to prepare and we've seen him fight a few teams, so we should have a good handle on what he can do. He suddenly took one last inhale of his cigarette then flicked it away. He cracked a few joints and got ready.

Cody: "Begin."

He smirked as I rushed him. Even in full armor I was pretty agile. As I got in range of him I sidestepped to the right suddenly, revealing Blake who was hiding behind me. As soon as Blake got passed me I continued my charge. Blake swung from the left, making him sidestep to the right, and into my path. He made eye contact with me and flames rushed from around his hand and arm, however I was already swinging my sword. Just before my sword reached the fabric of his jacket the flames solidified into a shield. I followed through with my swing and sent Cody sliding back quite a few feet.
