My head shot in their direction, the hatchet ready to strike.
Tommy's dad Jeff walked up to me slowly, his hands in the air in surrender.
I sighed in relief and placed the hatchet down.
"I knew you'd be okay. How's my boy?" He asked.
"Knocked out." I said with a shrug. Jeff groaned and killed a zombie close to us.
Finally, Tommy woke up. He searched around frantically only for him to relax when he saw his dad and I.
"I'm sorry I left you, Y/n. I thought you were right behind me, and when I went to go back-"
I held my hand up with a smile.
"Don't worry about it. I'm fine." He got up and we started to walk with his dad.
"What's going on, papa?" 10k asked.
"It's the apocalypse, boy."
The memory of when it all started made me smile weakly. That was the first time Thomas and I had really bonded.
Later that night after his dad went to sleep we sat in the truck and made a pinky promise to never leave each other again.
This memory however made me frown. We had promised not to leave each other and that's exactly what I was going to do.
Everyone was taking turns on watch for zombies and for me. Right now, it was Doc.
"You're going to make it through this, kid." He reassured taking my bandages.
"No I won't. But, that's okay. At least I can accept it." I shrugged. Doc only sighed and patted my shoulder.
"You're going to be okay. You can't die. Who else is going to keep the other kid from dying?" He chuckled.
I frowned.
"He kept me alive. Not the other way around." Doc scoffed.
"Tell that to him." He said pointing over to 10k who was supposed to be watching out for zombies. But he kept his eyes on me.
I shake my head, looking down with a sniffle.
"He's gonna have to learn how to live without me. I know this is too bad to recover from without the proper medicine. I want you to watch over him, Doc. For me." I ask weakly.
He sniffled and nodded leaning down and kissing my head. Warren walked over to me, giving Doc some time to sleep.
"How are you feelin', baby?" She asked me. I shrugged.
"Could use a hamburger right about now." I joked. She chuckled softly and grabbed my hand.
"You're gonna get through this, honey. I know you will." She kissed it softly.
"You're the best role model Anyone can ask for. I hope you know that." I said. Her lip quivered. Everyone knew it was bound to happen.
I wasn't gonna make it through the night. After another hour of watching over me and reminiscing of the 'good ol days.' I fell asleep.
That night I dreamt of better days, happier times, a time where you didn't have to keep one eye open. Where people died...and stayed dead.
I thought about how I never got a chance to have a family. I never got to marry someone. We couldn't have kids and we'd never get married.
I thought of how sad he'll be when I leave. Tommy, I mean. What he might go through. I pray that he recovers but, I was ready to go.
But when I opened my eyes I had an out of body experience. I was no longer lying on the ground but, more like standing beside Tommy, looking down at my body.
Tommy sat beside me, holding my hand. Tears streaming down his face as he rocked gently back and forth.
"Please. Take me instead." I heard him mutter. He must've just found out....
"Please, I love her." He cries. I was taken back by those words. They weren't playful and harmless like before. It was serious and passionate.
"I can't live without you." I heard him say through his sobs. My lip quivered.
"He really loves you." I heard and old familiar voice say. I looked to my right to see Tommy's dad.
I gasped and pulled him into a hug. He gave me his familiar old chuckle.
"I've missed you, sweet pea." He told me.
"I missed you too." I say sincerely.
"You're not thinking of leaving him are you?" He asks seriously. I tilt my head in confusion.
"I have a choice?" I ask. He chuckles again and nods.
"You were so ready to die. You gave up. You didn't want to live. No matter how much you told yourself you did."
I looked down at my feet in guilt.
"It's just hard. Being without everyone. Having to fight for survival everyday, never knowing if I was going to live or not."
"That's life. People left you before all this. People had to fight to survive before this. Everyday was a challenge pre and post Z. It's who you surround yourself with that will make your will to live grow. Think of all these folk you're gonna hurt. It ain't your time, darlin'" He said.
I nodded, his speech really breaking through. I looked over at 10k again who was laying next to my body curled in a sobbing ball.
"I'm ready."
With those words. I pulled myself being pulled forward. A gasp erupted from my lips as I awoke.
I was ready to live again.
