The bomb sirens blared. She and I covered our heads and got down as the first wave of German bombers came. We were used to this situation, and though it scared us every time, we felt fairly safe; besides, what could go wrong for us this time? Behind us, a building exploded. She screamed and clutched her side wailing in pain. "What is it," I asked her in a panicked voice. "Please, answer me..." I got no response. "Wake up," I pleaded, but she wasn't listening. Her eyes locked on some faraway vision, and she was gone.
