Short Story - Donny Bonkers

It was almost 9 o'clock in the evening, Wednesday, first week in October.  It felt like it too.  There was no longer any warmth to the air during the day and at night the air felt chilled, like it just came out of a freezer.  Donny thought to himself that he should have brought gloves outside with him.  Then he realized that gloves would only prevent him from the dexterous task of tying all these firework fuses together.

He meticulously entwined each thin fuse with the one next to it, in five neat bundles of fifteen.  These were his entire supply of Big Bubba's Booming Bottle Rockets, which he was purposely saving for a special occasion such as this one.

Today was the day he was going to get sweet revenge.

Ok, so that last part was a lie.  Its not actually revenge if your target didn't do anything wrong.

From his concealed position next to a lilac bush in his backyard, Donny was carefully aiming the small rockets directly into the open bedroom window of his neighbor (and nemesis) Herschel Waltzington.  Everyone called him Hershey for short, except Donny.  When Donny spoke that name, he violently emphasized each syllable in such a way that it made him spit a little.  It might as well had been venom.

Donny wasn't even sure why he didn't like Herschel Waltzington.  There was something nonspecific about him that drove Donny crazy.  He just hated him for some reason.

From his position, Donny could see right into Hershey's bedroom.  He could see posters on the wall of some stupid anime or lame boy bands.  He could also see the top of a head.  Someone, presumably Hershey, was sitting at a desk or something.

This was it.  The time was now.

With a flick of the lighter, he ignited all five bundles, one after the other.   They hissed and sputtered as the little fires raced along the fuses, splitting toward each bottle rocket.

With a startling shriek, each little rocket ignited and zoomed out of the homemade launcher and flew directly into Hershey's window.

Within ten seconds, all seventy-five rockets bombarded the bedroom, ricocheting off the walls, knocking things around and filling the room with smoke before exploding with a small pop.

Donny watched with a huge smile while that fat lump Hershey screamed and jumped around, crying out for his mom before tripping and falling on his face.

The sight made Donny suddenly laugh out loud.  He covered his mouth and looked around to see if anyone heard him over the chaos Hershey was currently experiencing.

He reluctantly decided that now would be a good time to quietly slip away before he was discovered.  Guilty, but happy.
