Chapter 4: Lightning

We were in Storm Sensing when a loud bang rang through the halls followed by a blast of cold air. The ground shook and everyone in the class fell to the floor. "Quick, everyone outside! Avoid falling rocks! Fly out the windows!" Shouted our teacher. "Wait," I shouted to Flash, "what about Snowstorm, Spark, and all of those guys. Their all in target practice which is farthest from any windows." "They'll be fine, but we might not be if you stand their worrying about them." Flash grabbed me by the arm and tugged me closer to the window. She let go and jumped out the window, I followed shortly as a few others flew out the same window. As soon as it was clear I bounded forward and leapt out the window making sure to spread my wings. I dodged falling rocks and landed into the lake beside Flash. I bobbed up and down as I waited for Snowstorm but he never came. "Where's Snowstorm!" I shouted at Flash. "She responded with "I don't know, but he should be here." I swam around looking for him in every group of frightened dragonets. I couldn't find him anywhere. A rescue team came by and asked the principal is anyone was missing. I overheard him say, "Spark, Squall, Rain, Snowstorm, and the teacher Typhoon." I saw them lift off towards the windowless part of the school. After what felt like hours, I saw them come out with the limp bodies of Shock, Squall, and Rain, but no Snowstorm or Typhoon. As they placed the bodies on flying platforms, two more rescue people came out carrying the body's of Typhoon, and what looked like a half white Stormfang. Our parents came flying in to pick us up and take us home. When Snowstorms parents came they looked around and flew down to me. "Hey Lightning, we're taking you home, where's Snowstorm?" They asked. "I'm not sure, we aren't in the same class." I responded. They looked over to the unclaimed white Stormfang. "I think we found him." They walked over and whimpered. "Oh no, my baby Snowstorm." A rescue officer came up to her and said, "excuse me ma'am, we need to take him to the hospital." "Okay, do you know when we can see him again?" She asked. "We'll notify you, what's your name?" "Breeze." "Okay Breeze." And with that the rescue crew lifted off with Snowstorm, Typhoon, Shock, Squall, and Rain. "Come on Lightning, let's get you home." "I'm coming." I waved goodbye to Flash as Breeze and Cloud lifted off towards their house. I followed behind, worried for Snowstorm. We landed a few minutes later with a thump as we landed on the wooden deck high above the canyon. "Come on Lightning, let's have a snack. Your parents are still at work." Said Cloud. Yep, my parents work from dawn to dusk, hardly ever time to see me. Working as rock breakers takes a toll on family life. Snowstorms family has basically adopted me. "Coming." I shout as I walk in and am greeted by Daybreak and Midnight, the two sky-wolves that Snowstorm and I found abandoned by a cave. "Aww, hey guys." I rub their heads in they jump up and down because they want to play. "I'll take the pups outside." I shout as I bring the sky-wolves outside to the rocks. "Kay, be safe." Breeze shouts back. I grab a ball and toss it. Daybreak and Midnight chase after and Midnight catches it and runs away before Daybreak can grab it. Midnight then runs up and jumps on me. "Aww, you silly goose." I roll over and he jumps off. I toss the ball a few more times before heading back inside. When I walk through the main room, I see a plate of cactus berries, my favourite, sitting on the table. I snag a few on my talons and look at a catalogue. Tents, targets, storm jars, then I realize that this is the school catalogue, but why a tent. "By the way Lightning, the schools doing a camping trip in a few weeks." Said Cloud. "Okay." I respond. "We ordered the two tents for you both, ones blue and white and the other is blue and green." "Okay thanks, but what if Snowstorm isn't back by then." "I'm sure he will be." "Okay."  I've never been on a camping trip without Snowstorm, it's our thing. All of a sudden I feel something jump up onto my back. "Daybreak, come here." I say as Daybreak hops off and runs upstairs. I chase her up and follow as she enters Snowstorm's room. I pick her up and head back downstairs to see Midnight sitting on the moss bed. I place Daybreak down beside him. "So what's for dinner?" I ask. "How about shock-shrimp balls." "Sure." I do my homework as I wait for dinner. 30 minutes later I go and sit at the table. Cloud sits down as well as Breeze walks over and places the food on the table. I nab a few and place them on my plate. I shout "question time!" "Yes, yes. Let's get on with that." "Okay. Do you possibly know why Snowstorm's scales are white now?" They exchange a glance and Cloud suppresses a sigh. "Fine we'll tell you." I clap my talons in delight. "I'm not Snowstorms actual father." Sighs Cloud. "What, then who is?" "A Glacialfang named Blizzard." "Woah, woah, woah, hold up. A Glacialfang." "Yes I met him in the market and he showed interest. I agreed only because he was kinda cute." Said Breeze. "Really." I rolled my eyes. "It wasn't meant to happen, he invited me to hang out at his house. I didn't know he meant to sleep there." "Then where does Cloud come in?" "A few months later he came up asking about possibly dating. As you can see him now he is pretty cute." She says while rubbing against Cloud. "Even though I told him about the egg he still stuck with me till now and forever more." "Thanks for telling me, does Snowstorm know." I asked. "No, we never told him. It was safer that way." "Okay ..." the two sky-wolves jump up onto me as we hear a knock on the door. Cloud walks over and opens the door. "Hello are you Cloud." "Yes." "Okay, I'm an agent from the hazard zone. I have some questions about your son, Snowstorm." Said the large dragon. "Umm, can I talk to my mate for a second." Asked Cloud. "Fine." She said as Cloud and Breeze walked over to the kitchen to talk. "And who might you be?"She asked me. "Oh, I'm just Snowstorms friend. My parents always work late so I've basically become on of the family." "I see, I guess you can stay." She shoves past me and into the house. I look over and see Daybreak and Midnight cowering in the corner.  "I guess you can ask some us stuff." Said Cloud. "Okay first question. Who is Snowstorms actual father?" "Cloud of course." Answered Breeze. "Falsehood, it's actually Blizzard the Glacialfang." "What wha, no. Why would anyone have an egg with a Glacialfang of all dragons." "You can't trick me, I know all about your past love." "That's a little creepy." "Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever don't focus on that fact. Why didn't you keep Snowstorm from school." "We didn't know this would happen, plus it's the law to send dragonets to school." "That is true. Final question, would you like Snowstorm to learn how to control these... abilities." "Yeah, we don't want him to accidentally hurt someone." "Okay, we can send him for free to the cross-continent school if you would like." "That would be great, but..." "but what." "But, we would need to send Lightning as well, they never go anywhere without each other." "Fine, I can see if we could set that up." "Thanks." And with that the dragon left through the front door. The wolves crawled out and cuddled me. I look up to Breeze and Cloud. "So that's it, your just going to send Snowstorm and I away, away from everything we know. Have you even considered that we have new friends as well!" "It's going to be okay Lightning, it's already decided." "Well you should probably talk to my parents before just sending me off!" The two of them look at each other with sad eyes. "You see. There was an accident at your parents workplace." "And what happened." "Your parents, th-they they died." I look at them with a shocked and sad expression on my face. "No, no, that can't be true." "We're sorry Lightning, that's why we took you home. Your parents would have been picking you up no matter what." Daybreak senses my distress and rubs her head across my leg in understanding. "So who do I stay with for now." "Us I guess, unless you know of any other family you have." "I don't, they all live with other tribes for some reason." "Then us it is. We have all your important stuff downstairs, but we should probably fly to your house to check for anything else." "Okay, let's go." I walk forwards towards the door and grab a few baskets to carry everything else in. Breeze and Cloud follow as I jump out and spread my wings towards my house. I flap multiple times before diving down slowly to the low crevice I used to live in. I land and shower a few pebbles down the canyon. Breeze also lands while Cloud stays in the sky. "Come on, just climb through here." I gesture towards an opening and slither through. She follows close behind as I head towards my room. I walk in and see my Spark-a-too Scales sitting in his cage. He squawks at me and I rush over to grab his cage. I hand him over to Breeze as I sort through the rest off my stuff. In the end I had my dagger, my bow and arrows, a few blankets, and my favourite jewels. Breeze moves out of the way as I dash into my parents room and wrap myself in their blankets. I can smell their scent and bundle closer. I see my mothers amulet and drop it onto my neck. I then grab my dads favourite blade and grab that as well. I fold the blanket and place it in the basket. As I walk out I say, "I think that's it." I quickly grab all of our family's coins and pop the basket out the hole. I then scramble out and pluck Scales from Breezes outstretched talons. I help her out as Cloud grabs a basket. We fly back skywards in silence other than the squawking of Scales. As we land back at my new home I walk inside and bring my stuff to the empty room next to Snowstorms. I grab the rest of my stuff from Cloud and Breeze and sort everything into places across the room. I place Scales cage by the window and let him out after attaching my Way Home tracker to help him to fly back here. I look over at the door and see Daybreak and Midnight waiting for me. I walk downstairs with them and cuddle as I'm crying soaking the mats.
