The Setting Sun

I stumbled onto the rooftop of the hospital. It had been exactly 27 minutes since Anden had delivered the news. Day's therapy would take two years to bring his mind back to normal capacity, and even then, it could take 2-3 more years to bring his memories back. Not even mentioning the state of the art facilities he needed were in Antarctica. Bloody Antarctica!

Music drifted up from a nearby apartment building. I wanted to shout at the tenants to turn down that stupid noise- but then I stopped. The fight had gone out of me, and instead, I just listened. I didn't recognize the artist, but his voice was beautiful.

Hey you can tell the world

That you're leaving

And you can pack your bags

And spread your wings

And you can tell them all

That it's over

But while you wave goodbye

I'll be getting closer

Stand there and look into my eyes

And tell me that all we had were lies

Show me that to you don't care

And I'll stay here if you prefer

Yes I'll leave you without a word

Without a word

For some reason, the tenants turned it off at that point. The angelic sound stopped, and I sighed.

Standing up, I walked to the edge of the building. 32 stories up. A fall from this point- and I stopped. Day would never have wanted that. So instead I gazed out into the city. The sun was setting, and the last drops of day were kissing the horizon.

I suddenly remember something Day said once, almost a year ago. It feels like another life, one where we were so young and invincible.

"Sometimes, the sun sets earlier. Days don't last forever, you know."

As I gaze out again over the skyline, I saw ripped and damaged buildings left from the recent battles with the Colonies. Ripped and damaged, yes, but workers were busy repairing them. One day, perhaps soon, they would be whole again.

That's when I realized. Day's end, yes, and the sun sets, but it always rises again. Day could spend eight years in Antarctica, but as long as he gets his memories back, that's okay. I'll wait for him.

I sit back down on a block of cement and start twisting my paperclip ring again.

"I'll wait for you, Daniel Wing."

I stand up and blow a kiss to the last drop of sunlight dripping out of sight.

"I love you."
