Later in the night, my mother had come to visit me. Once she'd entered the room, she sat down on the edge of my bed.

"Now, Josie, I know you do not wish to be married, but it has to happen sooner or later. You know what will happen if you don't." She reminded.

"The oubliette, I know." I muttered. Such a place would not be the way to live. It was cold, and the place was entirely absent of light. I would be living the life of a prisoner. Even though I wasn't now, it already felt as if I was.

"Not only that, but without this marriage, you'll never find happiness. The same goes for this.. curse." She seemed to frown at that last word. "You must never use it, or else you'll never be happy. Remember what I told you about your grandmother, Edythe?"

I nodded.

"Yes, she married your grandfather, Rikalo, and she could've been happy, very happy, but by using her powers, she was consumed by evil." She said before gently grabbing my chin with two of her fingers to ensure I didn't look away. "I wouldn't want the same thing to happen to you. So, this is the only way."

"What if it wasn't?"

"Oh, sweet, if only. There is no other way. I'm sorry."

That wasn't enough to convince me though. I believed there was another way, maybe not here, but somewhere out there.
