Prologue

The first time meister Franken Stein saw Spirit Albarn his heart nearly stopped within his chest. Spirit had eyes like skyline blue and burning sunset hair. He'd never laid eyes on somebody so breathtakingly unique before in his entire life. What was more interestingly enticing was the color of the boys soul. Pulsating amber light emulated around it in spastic waves. It was erratically beautiful and Stein was deeply curious. It was also the first time in his life that Stein had prayed for something. He prayed with all his might that the boy would be a weapon; his weapon.

He breathed a sigh of relief when he caught a glimpse of Spirit's identification tag, which read weapon.
Stein felt excitement bubble throughout his entire being. He walked in long strides, hoping to approach the boy first. However, he'd stopped just moments from reaching the boy when he saw a petite girl approach him. She had pasture eyes and sunkissed cheeks. Her pale wheat hair fell in natural curls around her heart-shaped face. Only one word accurately described the girl; divine. Stein sighed when he saw that she also identified as a meister.

He had a ghost of a chance against someone like her. He saw how the redhead's soul flippantly became more spastic with excitement as she approached him. Stein decided that his quest was futile, leaving the scene with a turned back. He sauntered to a small picnic table nearby. He decided that he would take whichever weapon approached him. He was fully confident that he could masterfully wield any kind of weapon, but only longed to have Spirit.

Unfortunately for the silver haired boy nobody ever did approach him. He waited for hours as the number of students dwindled down to nothing. He was beginning to regret not being more forward in choosing somebody to assist him. It wasn't that nobody was interested in the meister; it was just that after witnessing Kami and Spirit converse the boy became quite agitated. He had a slightly murderous look on his face that scared all potential partners away at first glance.

It also turned out that Spirit became sick the first week of school and was unable to attend normal classes, so Stein was unable to see him. Things went on normally until Stein was finally informed that there was one weapon that was without a meister. Stein unenthusiastically walked with quiet footsteps to the Death room. Typically students weren't summoned to the Death room so quickly after enrollment but this was a special case. Lord Death was quite interested in both Spirit and Stein.

In Stein's case it was to monitor his madness as requested by the boy's parents, but also because Stein exhibited massive potential. In Spirit's case it was because he was the only scythe weapon in the entire school and had been for many years. Upon arriving to the door to the strange room Stein's heart began to race. Despite not seeing the other boy, he could sense Spirit's soul. Stein entered the room and stopped walking as he stepped inside.

He was greeted by a funny looking clown like skull face and a massive black cloak. He hadn't quite pictured Lord Death this way, but was apathetic regardless. He was more interested in the redhead. To the side of Lord Death stood a tall man with Auburn hair and a woman with black hair. He recognized the woman as Ms. Yumi, his teacher.

"Hello Stein, it's nice to say that you're finally able to meet your partner," Ms. Yumi said, her face not matching the kindness her words held.

Spirit was several inches taller than Stein. His smiling eyes gazed into Stein's as he held out his hand for the meister.

"I'm Spirit Albarn; it's nice to meet you. I look forward to working with you. Please craft me into the weapon I'm meant to be," Spirit said chipperly.

Stein took Spirit's hand in his, not breaking eye contact with the boy. Spirit's hand was hot against Stein's hand.

"Likewise, I'm Hakase Franken Stein. I'm sure you're already a fine weapon," Stein said, and as out of character as it was he really did mean those words.

"That's a fairly long name, what do you usually go by?" Spirit asked.

"You can just call me Stein."

Spirit released the boy's hand. After a few moments of conversation everyone was dismissed from the Death room. Right before Stein made it through the door he turned back to Lord Death.

"Thank you," he said with an almost nonexistent smile. Lord Death just clocked his head and watched as the meister exited the room.
