THE DRIVE TO school is tense. No one dares to speak in the car, Edward's eyes focusing on the road ahead of him and not attempting to look at either twin in the car with him. Bella's sitting in the passenger seat, her knees tucked into her chest as her feet rest on Edward's dashboard. Dawn is in the back seat, one leg propped up on the seat and her arms wrapped around her shin, chin resting on her own knee as Edward parks the car in the lot in front of the school.

Dawn lets herself think over the time spent with her mother, the laughter they had all shared during their time together. Leaving Renee behind was the most difficult part of Dawn's time there, her eyes glazing over as she had turned to her mother in the airport to hop on the plane back to Forks. She wishes she had hugged her a second longer, taken in the smell of Renee's hair a moment more, but Dawn was already pushing the chance of missing the flight and knew no one but Edward could afford another one. The last thing Dawn wants was to feel like she owed any of the Cullens something.

Even though the car has been parked for a minute already, no one is making a move to get out and go into the school. Dawn feels like she is bound to break if she moves an inch, deciding to sit still in her seat.

"Do you both regret going?" Edward asks them, his head turning to look at the twins for the first time this morning.

Dawn takes a breath, thinking over his question before shaking her head. Even though the visit brought on another wave of guilt and sadness, she couldn't think of any moment where she regretted seeing her mom. It was a good trip away from all the craziness that Forks carries, the time spent with Renee giving both sisters a chance to relax and feel slightly normal again.

"No," Bella answers verbally, noting how Dawn agrees with her statement. "It was really great to see Mom, just really hard saying goodbye to her."

"That was definitely the hardest part of the trip," Dawn agrees, her voice uncharacteristically quiet as she talks. "Knowing what's coming. . . I didn't want to leave."

"It doesn't have to be goodbye," Edward suggests, earning a glare from both sisters.

Edward and Emmett had gotten together and formulated their own version of a "plan" that involved hiding both girls away whenever the Volturi comes to see if they'd been changed. They thought since both sisters were immune to the gifts they possessed, there'd be no way that Demetri could track them. It was quickly shot down by everyone that had any form of common sense. Aro would only have to touch one of the Cullens to know where the girls were hidden and then not only would the coven face consequences, both Bella and Dawn would probably be sentenced to a death where they never woke up again.

It was decided that their only option is to be changed. It's the only way to ensure that everyone will be safe from breaking any laws. Still, Edward's constantly trying to find ways to get the Swans out of it. Dawn appreciates his efforts, but every failed suggestion only shrinks the little shred of hope she's clinging to.
