The feeling of complete focus, absolutely nothing going through your mind but the situation directly in front of you, is what I strive for when playing Mario Kart. Of course the game is easy, but showing off in front of Mike is the one thing I love most when it comes to video games, so taking every extra precaution is part of the deal. Mike's face when he loses is always priceless. A mixture of anger, astonishment, and denial play on his face as he stares at the tv with the trophy displaying the name Player 1. He runs a hand through his hair and sighs defeatedly as he drops the controller on the floor and starts upstairs, obviously pissed at me. I can't help but to giggle as he stomps on every step in his path.

Shaking my head, I smile and put up the controllers, turning the tv off and heading into the kitchen. We had pizza last night, the best food in the world, and every bit of hope I have courses through my body, desperately wanting there to be leftovers. I open the fridge and groan loudly at the empty contents of the shelves. I hear Mike laughing as he walks down the stairs. I look at him with a scowl. The fact that he has the very last slice of pizza in his hands, and the fact that he magically got it before me, both run through my mind as I lunge at him, using every bit of momentum i'd gained to try and reach him in the fastest time possible, missing him by inches, and watching as he ran back upstairs, taking the last bit of my happiness with him.

After I look through the cupboards and the freezer in our food-less kitchen, and finally accept that I will not be eating food for now, I head upstairs to my room. The soft creeks of the floorboards beneath my feet make me wonder whether or not my sanity is still intact, or if the rest of it fled with that slice of pizza. Either way I know I need a distraction, and the only thing powerful enough to penetrate my brain and calm its tense nerves is music.

I open my bedroom door and walk slowly to the bed, plopping down on the edge of the mattress. I fumble with my blanket until I find my phone, the keeper of my music. I shove the earbuds in and hit shuffle. Reaching over and grabbing my guitar, I lay back and finger the notes to my favorite song; Hail To The King by Avenged Sevenfold. I feel my eyes slowly closing as time passes, the comfort of sleep resting nearby. Pushing my guitar away from me, I curl up in my blankets and start to drift into the abyss that is my dreams.

Funny thing about sleep; it comes when you don't want it, but when you do it's nowhere in sight. Laying helplessly in my bed, I open my eyes and stare at the ceiling. I start to count the tiny glow-in-the-dark planets and stars leftover from when me and Mike were kids. I only kept them there because they make me feel calm and that counting them helps me fall asleep faster, but tonight it doesn't seem like my little trick is going to work.

Groaning dramatically loud, I heave myself up and untangle my legs from my sheets. The instant cold splattering itself against my bare legs raises goosebumps all over my body. I look over and see my window is open. The wind is starting to pick up outside. Dragging myself to the left side of my room, I close the window and lean against my dresser.

My mom buys me clothes all the time, but not a single thing has been worn, they all get put into the drawers of this dresser, never to be seen again until new inhabitants need to take up space as well. All the clothes I wear are hung up in the closet on the opposite side of my room, conveniently placed so that the contaminants from these drawers cannot somehow infect those on the hangers. Although, a very large portion of my clothes are on the floor as well, dirty mixed with clean. It's not just clothes down there though, lots of random things of mine find themselves there. The worst part is stepping on something hard when you believed it to be soft. False hope in a land of lies.

Walking back to my bed, I grab my phone and check the time; 12:23 am. Holding my breath, I open my door and quietly walk down the stairs hoping to not wake up my parents and to be able to catch the end of Supernatural. My supply of hope is starting to end because Mike is sitting in the living room watching Spongebob, again. Sighing, I plop down into the chair next to him and check which episode he's watching. Of course, it's the episode I despise the most; Spongebob's best day ever. The mediocre singing and the obvious plot both make for a bad show.

"Can you please, for the love of god, change the channel?" I said.

"What? Vicky doesn't get his way for once so he's all mad? How cute."

"You take my pizza and you take the tv, what more do you want from me, my organs to sell on eBay?"

"Actually, yeah. I owe this guy some cash. If you're willing to hand some over..."

Trying not to chuckle and to keep the moment serious, I get up and head outside. The slap of cold across my face awakens the rest of me that was still semi-asleep. I peer across the street to the new neighbors. Looks like they are still awake.

Deciding to not go over and creep them out in the middle of the night, I start walking down the sidewalk, my hands at my side. The wind causing my body to become numb, but my brain to become stupid and not go inside. I glance down at my shorts and notice white covering the green. I look closer and realize it's snowing. With a small smile playing on my face, I turn around and head back inside.

"Done with your pity party so soon?" Mike called to me as I stepped inside the door.

Ignoring him, I went back upstairs to my room. It was snowing outside and I had school tomorrow. At least there would be one thing to wake up to that I didn't totally hate. The fact that I wouldn't be getting much sleep haunts my mind, but I ignored the anxiety and plowed into the blankets and pillows covering my bed once more, shutting my eyes and trying to turn off my brain full of never-ending thoughts. The comfort of snow outside my window, and the dreams that followed, rocked my mind to sleep in a blur of white and grey.
