Bohemian Rhapsody
Bohemian Rhapsody is a 2018 biopic (biographic picture) directed by Bryan Singer. It stars an incredible cast of talented people such as Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, Ben Hardy as Queen drummer and vocalist Roger Taylor, Joe Mazzello as Queen bassist John Deacon and Gwilym Lee as Queen guitarist Brian May. So far it has won 2 Golden Globe Awards, one for Best Actor In A Drama (Rami Malek) and one for Best Drama. Malek also won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor. The movie has 5 Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor and Best Film.
The movie is set during the time where Freddie Mercury was a part of Queen, which was a period that lasted from 1970 to 1991, and moves locations quite frequently, seeing as it follows Queen as they go on tour and travel, but mainly uses England as a location.
The movie is about, evidently, Queen and their iconic and memorable front man, Freddie Mercury. Freddie is an incredibly flamboyant, yet extremely talented, young man who joins a band integrated by Roger Taylor and Brian May, seeing as these last two had lost their lead singer and bassist, Tim Staffel in their previous band, Smile. Freddie, Brian and Roger formed the band Queen, and later found John Deacon, a man who became their bassist. All four of them are talented, have big dreams and means to make them a reality. They have very different ways to experiment with sound, giving their music a unique touch. This leads to them being signed by a record label and recording several wonderful albums. Then, in 1975, Freddie brings to the table his idea to record a song titled Bohemian Rhapsody, which implied taking a lot of risks and doing things that haven't been done before, but, despite this, the other band members agree to record it. They finish the song, their record label refusing to make it a single for the album, saying that it's too long and strange. However, Queen refused to let this go and insisted, being extremely proud of the masterpiece they created. The song does end up being released, and critics absolutely hate it. They call it mediocre and tasteless. But, to the critics' surprise, the song was a hit and loved by people all over the world. It's become the band's most recognizable project and skyrockets them to stardom. Queen goes on tour and records other iconic songs, while at the same time deal with the stress of staying together as a band and their own personal problems. The most prominent problem is the fact that, while Freddie does have a girlfriend who he is completely in love with, he begins to experiment with his undeniable attraction to men, something that he is very private about, despite his flamboyant stage persona. Away from his personal life, everything's going incredibly well. Queen is extraordinarily successful and admired. However, Freddie starts to drift away from his bandmates and pursues a wilder life, partying, doing drugs and having a variety of partners. This quickly affects the band because Freddie decides to pursue his solo career, something that upsets the others, and puts a wall between them. His attempt at going solo doesn't go to well, and his lifestyle leads to him suffering from a lot of health problems. Then, in 1985 Freddie reunites with Queen to apologize and perform together at an event called Live Aid, one of the biggest concerts of all time. While preparing for the event, Freddie reveals something horrible to them: he has AIDS. They try to sympathize with him, but he tells them that that's not how he wants to spend whatever time he has left, and they all express their respect and love for each other, being not only bandmates, but also family. Live Aid finally comes, and not surprisingly, Queen gave the performance of a lifetime, being incredibly powerful onstage, and Freddie outshining everybody there, as he did all his life, even until the very end.
I strongly recommended this movie for so many reasons. It's my favorite movie of all time, and that's not changing any time soon. Now, I will say that it has a lot of historical inaccuracies, and not everything happens exactly the way it did in real life, but it does give us insight into Freddie's mind while remaining respectful. The performances in this movie are electrifying, not only Malek's, the supporting cast was amazing. It's one of the most engaging movies I've ever seen. More than anything, this movie is an incredible tribute to Queen, their music and Freddie Mercury. The most prominent feature that everyone is sure to like is the music. The movie's soundtrack consists of solely Queen songs, otherwise known as the best type of music. The sound design makes the music feel so exciting, and it really manages to make you feel as if you're part of it, something that Queen always aspired to achieve, which they did. The music is truly one of the best features of this movie. It has so much emotion and power in it, and it can make people feel so many different things. I don't think I've ever felt a bigger thrill than when iconic Queen songs would start playing. Apart from the music, the other feature that I adore are the performances. Rami Malek gave it his all when playing Freddie, and it really shows. His portrayal of Mercury is absolutely perfect. Rami studied even all of the singer's mannerisms and ways of reacting to different situations. It's like Freddie came back to life. The fact that Brian May and Roger Taylor were part of the creation of this movie really helped, I think, seeing as they knew Freddie better than anyone, and they love and respect him in such an incredible way. This movie was a passion project. The people involved in making it put so much work into it to do justice to the four incredible men that shaped music as we know it and inspire thousands of people every day with their timeless and powerful music. This movie really captures how Queen wasn't a band, it was a family, and how they cared so much for their music and their fans. It's very obviously shown to us in the movie that music was important to them, and that it gave them so much happiness. Happiness that they gave us by doing what they did. Bohemian Rhapsody shows this so perfectly, and reminds everyone who watches it about the joy that Queen's music has caused them, or, helps people discover this amazing band and gives them a newfound happiness. This movie also remembers Freddie exactly the way he would want us to remember him. It doesn't spend time making you feel sorry for him, or focus solely on the fact that Freddie's gone. It instead immortalizes him and shows how he changed music forever and the way he shined so bright, even in times of controversy. It helps Freddie's memory live on, it doesn't portray him as that one gay singer who died of AIDS, it portrays him as the talented, passionate and strong man he was, dedicated to making others feel different emotions with his music and his godlike voice. It truly lets Queen's and Freddie's legacy live on in such a beautiful way. It represents how unforgettable, original, thrilling, powerful, magnificent, and inspiring Queen is and how that's never going to change. It's a must see for any person. I don't think I've ever seen a movie so perfectly brilliant. It took so much hard work and dedication from so many talented people, and their effort really makes this movie what it is: a stunning and marvelous depiction of an irreplaceable band that will forever live on.
