Selia could hardly sleep that night. She kept drifting in and out of consciousness, hoping for Galilea to send her a message on her tablet. Eventually, a chirping sound filled her bedroom, and she grabbed her tablet. She unlocked it hastily and peered at the screen. It said she had one new message.
It must be from Galilea! she thought happily.
The message, in fact, was not from Galilea. It was from Warren.
Warren? What does he want this early?
W: Hey Selia!!!
Selia grumbled and clicked on his name to answer.
S: What do you want???
W: ...
W: Are u going to Yimo?
S: WHO TOLD YOU?!?
W: I was outside Galilea's window & heard u talking
Rage filled her heart as she read his messages. How dare he spy on her!
S: that was a private conversation. You had no right to listen in.
W: I'm sorry! But, is it true?
S: ...yes
W: can I come with u?
Selia pondered his question, her anger subsiding. Could she allow him to come? In fact, could she allow him to stay? Warren had just made himself a liability. Selia rubbed her temples. If Warren didn't die of natural causes, Selia was tempted to kill him herself! But, their was still some sliver of a chance of him being useful.
S: yes
W: cool! C u 2morrow
She sighed and turned off her tablet. Selia could just imagine his brown eyes widening with the chance to escape to a luxurious island with his love. What had gotten into her? Selia wasn't in a habit of changing her mind or being sympathetic to Warren. Maybe Warren hated his life like she did. Selia closed her eyes and pulled the covers over her head. Part of her wanted to believe he really wanted to leave, but the other part suspected him of lying.
What a coward, she thought. He'd be willing to do anything to get out of his responsibility.
Then, a stab of hypocrisy pierced her heart. Isn't that exactly what she was doing right now? Lying to her parents, conspiring with Galilea. Those were cowardly things, perhaps even more cowardly than a boy wishing to escort a maiden to a dangerous island.
Selia squeezed her eyes shut and curled into a fetal position. The world was too complicated for a little Lia like her. Selia desperately hoped that, in Yimo, she might find what she was looking for.
...
"Lia! Wake up!" her mother shouted. Selia sat straight up, eyes wide open. She had just been having a horrible dream, a dream where Warren had asked to come with her to Yimo. That wasn't even the worst part about it, the worst part was that she had said yes!
"What's this?" her mother questioned, snatching her tablet out from under her pillow. Selia muttered scathing curses, rolling her eyes. Now she was definitely glad that her messages to Warren had never existed...
unless....
"I see you and Warren have been talking. It's good for you two to talk every once in a blue moon. You know, he fancies you quite a bit." her mama smiled as she turned the tablet off. "I'll let your talks stay secret for now."
