I made my way out of the back door of "Charlie’s Diner" and hummed to a tune softly. I had gotten a job, and it paid really well, so while I tried to catch up with school, I was earning my money to buy food and clothes. Though Rachel had always insisted that I didn't need to do any of that, I still felt like I did. It was a responsibility I was happy to take care of.
I thought it was time for a change after I graduated from high school. Looking at myself now, a nineteen year old who had a place to stay, food, and clothes, I was really proud of myself.
I had shown that I did not have to be forever sad about Vernard. I showed that I could move on with my life. After all, the entire world does not stop because of a boy.
Even though I missed him a lot, so, so much, I knew that I was eventually going to be okay, and now I was. Making my way through the darkness, I smiled. Everything was going to be okay, that I was sure of. It was just past ten so the moon was shining brightly in the sky. I looked up at it, amazed at how beautiful it looked tonight, a full moon, as white as milk.
The nice fall air, the crunching leaves on my feet, it was wonderful scenery. I sighed and made my way to the nearest shortcut, the park. While walking through it, I couldn’t help but feel free, something I had always longed for.
Upon arriving, I took off my hoodie and hat, and made my way to the kitchen. There I saw Liam, Rachel's boyfriend. He was drinking something. It looked weird and red but I ignored it, thinking it was just fruit punch.
What I could not ignore however was something growing in my mouth. The same thing always happened when Liam was drinking the same thing. It was odd, but I just made my way to the bathroom to calm down.
When inside I looked at the mirror and was not surprised to see myself. My usual glass blue eyes had turned blood red and my hair grew out again making it the long curly mass it was every time. Sighing, I took deep breaths.
Soon, I was back to normal. I had gotten used to it, and now it was easy for me, even though I got a horrible urge to snatch whatever Liam was drinking and drink it myself. Ever since I got mad and almost killed my father it always happened. I always ignored what Vernard had once told me, and convinced myself it was just a disease.
I made my way out and now both Liam and Rachel were there smiling at me. I smiled back happily.
"Hey guys." I said, giving each of them a hug.
They hugged me back and told me to sit, then asked me if I wanted something to drink. I nodded and Rach, my nickname for her got me some orange juice. I gulped it down and set the glass back on the table.
"So how was work?' Rach asked
"It was good; you know the same as always." I answered shrugging. Both of them nodded.
"So tomorrow one of my family members is coming. I'm sure he will love to meet you." Liam announced, grinning.
I nodded. That sounded cool, it would be nice to meet other people. I stood up and grabbed my glass with me to wash it.
"So what's his name?" I asked, curious.
“Oh his name is Vernard" Liam replied.
I froze. No, it couldn't be. There was no way it could be the same person. I can't see him now, not when I just started try to move on.
“Vernard, what is his last name?" I cautiously asked.
“Leon is his last name, like me.” He replied simply.
No, this could not be happening to me. That was just messed up. Though there was no way of thinking that Liam was lying to me. They never knew about me and Vernard. There was no way that they could be making all of this up from thin air.
Then suddenly the doorbell rang. All of us looked at the door and Rachel stood up.
"I'll get it" she said.
"No, you don't know who it is, what if it's someone dangerous? I'll get it." Liam said, making his way towards the door before Rachel could say anything.
I got away from the sink and followed Rachel, who was behind Liam. I had a bad feeling in my stomach I knew who it was. Though I prayed it wasn't, because just thinking about it made me start to get butterflies.
I didn't want that to happen.
Liam opened the door and yelled a "hey!" and an "I didn't expect you to come so soon!"
Then I made my way through both Rachel and Liam to see who they were talking to.
Right in front of me was the one and only, Vernard. There were so many things I wanted to do at that moment. I wanted to cry of joy, I wanted to hit him, I wanted to kiss him, but that all stopped when I saw his cold face.
Though that was not what broke my heart to pieces. He had a beautiful girl standing next to him. Hair as gold as the sun and eyes the color of emeralds. I knew she was not human because of the skin and how perfect her features were.
Soon I felt something running down my cheeks and I made my way quickly down the hall to get away from all of them. My heart felt broken. It felt torn apart. Though I felt the connection in my head when I saw him, when I saw her it just all broke down.
Did he marry someone because I told him no? Where was he all of this time?
There were so many questions in my mind and I just burst. I told myself to be strong and not cry, and after like five minutes I was back to normal. As I made my way outside again, I heard them talking in the living room, so I made my way there.
"Hey, where did you go Liz?" Rachel asked when she noticed me.
"I had to go to the bathroom, sorry. So who do I have to meet?" I asked cheerfully, well as cheerful as I could be.'
Liam stood up and made his way towards me. "Them. That is Alice and that is my littlest brother, Vernard." He said motioning towards them.
They both stood up and Alice was the first to greet me. She actually looked really nice, and she didn't seem like she wanted to be close to Vernard at all. Not that it mattered anymore. He had obviously moved on.
"Hi! My name is Alice, but you can call me Ally if you want" she said giving me a friendly hug.
I smiled at her. I think I was going to be good friends with her. Then, it was Vernard's turn. His hair turned from red to pink to white to orange.
"Hi nice to meet you my name is Vernard" he said. To the others he sounded cold, but I knew he was as emotional as me. I took out my hand and said "Nice to meet you too, my name is Elizabeth.”
Then we shook hands. A BIG shot of electricity went through us and while he looked confused, I hid it and looked polite. I knew I could never be back with him again, though deep in my heart I really wanted to.
