FURIOUS FICTION APRIL 2019 - THIS MONTH'S CRITERIA

"It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution."

"He's never done anything like this before."

"What's it going to be then, eh?"

-----

'It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution.'

'What's it going to be then, eh?'

'See for yourself.'

He hands me the package, a rectangular box wrapped in old, fraying newspaper, a golden cord holding it together.

I open it.

'Like what you see?'

I gasp in reply. Underneath the yellow paper lay an intricately designed antique silver box. I gently press and push the latch upwards. I glimpse at him. My breath hitches as a soft glow is cast from within. A fine translucent cloth veils the jewel. The royal jewel. I brush aside the cloth. A tiara. A chunky diamond with a mild pinkish tint in the center surrounded by rose gold branches, extending towards the edges with marquise diamonds as leaves. Truly remarkable. I notice the pattern on the box matches the jewel itself.

'Where did you get this from?' I ask.

'Raja.'

'He's never done anything like this before.'

He merely nods.

'Specifics?'

'Center gem- 5.3 carat purplish pink radiant cut; other diamonds- 1.2 carat marquise J very good. Metal, 22k rose gold.'

'Approximate value?'

'Oh, that's the terrible thing,' he looks into my eyes, 'the piece cannot be sold.'

'Why? Is it stolen?'

'Yes, but it gets worse. It cost a life.'

'I knew the boy has no morals! Why-'

'-I slew him.'

I look at him in horror. 'Mara, what is wrong with you!'

'Power is addicting, brother. And so is money.'

'Look, this is not right, they will come after you!'

'Well, they have begun to hunt. But evidence will point towards you, since you are the one who has the package. If, sorry, when they find you, you will be charged for theft and murder.'

He smirks. I can hear the faint sound of the sirens wailing. He moves toward the emergency exit, while I stay glued to the spot.

'Good bye, brother.'
