'I wish you could teach me that trick.' I can hear the longing in Carleys voice.

'You know I can't explain it to you.' I have tried though. I touch her hand.

'But don't worry. You can do a lot of things I can't.'

'I don't think you appreciate exactly how unique you are, Sam. I've seen other blind people, even those born blind, and noone can do what you just did.'

I stay quiet. It's not the first time someone tries to tell me that the things I do are unusual. Apparently noone uses the energy objects give of to navigate.

'Why don't you show mom that you are capable of taking care of yourself?' Carley wonders.

'I've tried a couple of times, but mom freaks out every time.'

'I wouldn't be to surprised there. The visual effects from your tricks are quite exciting.'

'Visual effects?' That's the first time I hear anything about seeable effects of my 'tricks' as Carley calls them.

'Well, your teddy glowed blue when he was floating towards your hand. And when you prepare food, everything happens without you doing a single thing. The knife cuts the onions into small cubes while the pancakes flip themselves and the bread gets buttered by a floating knife. You just sit at the counter with your eyes closed looking relaxed.' She sighes.

'You cannot appreciate how amazing it looks when things get out of your way when you walk.'

Suddenly the gloomy atmosphere in my room lightens. I can feel the excitement radiate of off her as she gets an idea.

'I know how to get mom of your back... Why didn't we think of this earlier.'

I concentrate. Thoughts are just another form of energy.
Carley wants to ask our other siblings to help. She thinks mom will worry less if I am always with one of my older brothers or sisters. Of course, once out of moms reach, they'll let me be, and do anything I want. They know and trust me.

'I do think you're on to a brilliant idea.' I tell Carley.

'I didn't say anything yet.' She looks at me with suspension.

Then she asks softly, 'Can you read minds?'

I shrug my shoulders.

'Only if I concentrate very hard. You just sounded so excited, I just wanted to know.'

She pays my arm.

'It's ok. Just don't let anyone else know. I'll get Nelly and Scott.'

She slips out and it doesn't take long for all three to sneak back into the room. Quickly Carley explains her idea. Twenty three year old Nelly and twenty one year old Scott agree with the plan immediately, and soon we make a time table for the next week.

Tomorrow is Saturday and Nelly is going to the beach with friends. She is willing to take me along. Mom wants to take me shopping but she can do that better on her own anyway.

We agree that the beach is a good place to start our plan. Scott and Carley decide to tag along. They call their friends and i call my two besties. Nelly warns her friends of the impending beach party. Everybody brings along something, either to eat or drink.

Happy, we say goodnight and go to sleep.

Mom isn't overjoyed about my plans, but seeing as Carley, Scott and Nelly help me convince her, she soon gives way.
