" GIO POV "

I’d beento Paris more times than I could count in the eight years I lived in London.

Yet seeing the city through Chloe’s eyes made it new again.

I couldn’t remember the last time I’d just let myself have fun, but I did that week.

We saw all the tourist sights. We strolled the Champs Elysées and rode the elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

We spent hours at the Louvre, where I passionately defended I.M. Pei’s glass pyramid.

“It’s a masterpiece,” I argued.

Chloe was more skeptical.

“It’s architectural vanity,” she retorted.

“A way to make a mark on the world. It seems egotistical.”

“What is the point of going through life without making a mark?” I challenged her.

Her eyes twinkled as she considered a reply.

An outsider listening to our conversation might have thought we were arguing, but we weren’t.

Our back-and-forth chatter was foreplay.

Zoe had been smothered under the suffocating weight of her grandmother’s debt for a long time.

Free of that, her real personality came out, smart and funny and vibrant.

“I try and make my mark by being a good person,” she said.

“A loving granddaughter, a loyal friend. I don’t need a massive building on the waterfront to feel like I’ve had an impact.”

A loyal friend to Dave Wesley? I frowned inwardly at the sudden stab of jealousy I felt when I heard his name.

Damn it. “You really hate that building, don’t you?”

She shook her head with a grin.

“Can I tell you a secret?” she asked, leaning into me conspiratorially.

“I kind of love it.”

“You do?” I looked at her, surprised, and pleasure filled my veins at her words.

“I really do. But don’t get a swollenhead.”

As soon as she said the words, she realized her double-entendre and flushed adorably. I laughed out aloud.

“Is that a hint, Chloe?”

“I was promised lunch,” she replied.

“And wine. But after that?” She moved closer to me and stood on tiptoe to whisper in my ear.

“It’s absolutely a hint.”

God, she was amazing.

I was having a fantastic time hanging out with her.

The sex was incredible, but even sitting across from her at dinner and listening to her was oddly satisfying.

I’d never felt this comfortable with anyone.

I even ignored work for a week, for heaven’s sake.

And I never did that.
