chapter five ! — the call

"Noboru, it's getting late buddy. How about we pick up the food and start heading home?" Amaya suggested as she stood next to the boy while his baby blue eyes switched back and forth between two different candies in concentration. He acted so focused and determined, it was as if the fate of the world depended on it.

The two were at the candy shop just down the road from the apartment. It was called Mr. Maki's Candy Shop. They always seemed to be spending most of their time there when ever Amaya had a day off or any free time to take Noboru out. Of course, Noboru spent most of his time at Mr. Maki's shop, more than anyone in fact. The young boy was absolutely obsessed with candy and loved it to death. He loved it more than the average child, especially since it contributed to his quirk. He didn't really have a favorite considering they were all his favorite. But Amaya knew for sure that when it comes to caramel, you couldn't go wrong with it when it came to Noboru.

The eight year old practically knew the ins out outs of the store. He could probably list out all the candies that are in the store. After school he would always stop by before heading home and when Amaya couldn't take the boy herself, Haru could always take him. He would never admit it but Haru loves the little candy shop as well. The owners loved Noboru. It was nice considering their children are all grown up. Some people miss having a child around.

"Okay May! But can I just find one more candy? Then I promise I'll be done" Noboru asked without taking his site away from the rows of candy on the shelves.

"Noboru" Amaya spoke in a warning tone with her hands on her hips in a stern manner.

Noboru turned his head over towards her and put on his best puppy face. His sky baby blue eyes were wide screaming pleads after pleads while his bottom lip trembled up at her. "Please?"

Amaya rolled her eyes but pat his head with a soft smile in agreement. "Alright, find one more candy and that's it. You're so lucky that I'm not on duty tonight"

Amaya watched as Noboru switched from one shelf to another, scanning through each different candy. She found it amusing how excited he gets over these little things.

"It's always lovely to see you two here" an elderly voice spoke from behind Amaya.

Amaya looked over her shoulder behind her to see an old man in his seventies with grey hair, circular glasses, and a green apron. He stood standing behind the counter with welcoming features. He smiled happily at the white haired girl with a sparkle of familiarity in his eyes. Amaya instantly greeted him with a smile and a wave.

"It's nice to see you too, Mr. Maki. How's your wife?" Amaya asked as she headed over towards the kind man.

The kind man perked up a bit at her question. "She's doing better, actually. The doctor said she will be released from the hospital tomorrow" Mr. Maki said.

Joy and relief came upon Amaya's face once she heard the news about Mrs. Maki.  "That's great! I'm so glad! I miss her smiling face always greeting us when we see her, she's a lovely woman"

A silly grin came upon Mr. Maki's face at the mention of his loving wife. "That she is, I'm a lucky man"

Amaya looked over at the clock on the wall behind Mr. Maki and almost gasped at the time. It was almost past dinner time and they still needed to pick up the food. Amaya turned around in her spot and looked around for Noboru. It wouldn't be hard since they were the only costumers in the shop. "Noboru are you rea —" Amaya stopped mid-way once she caught sight of the scene before her. Her brown eyes went wide and her face fell in shock.
