Absolutely not!” My Father said. The decision had been made. Hesiod and I were set to go. We were on the beach headed back to the ship. Clio had explained her plan to each of us individually, and we all thought it would work. That is, until the part of the plan where my father had to stay behind was revealed. Of course I was secretly scared to go face a god without my Father by my side, no matter how successful the Muses claimed our plan to be. But on the other hand my father and Hesiod were out of ideas, and I was desperate. Besides, Hesiod was coming with me and I knew he’d never let anything happen to me. He was saying this to my Father once again as I stood nearby, having already said my good byes. It was hard to hear Clio explain bluntly that my Fathers presence was hindering us from finding my mother. But it made sense and I stood by her plan. Hesiod reached to shake my Fathers hand and my father surprised all of us by giving Hesiod a gruff hug instead. Tears fell from my eyes, not just because the fact that my Father couldn’t come with us hit me. The rescue of my mother rested solely on the shoulders of two teenagers. Hesiod stood back and let my father and I have a final word while he readied the row boat to take us back to the ship. My Father wrapped his large hands around my shoulder and looked at me with tears in his eyes too. “Come back to me.” I nodded and hugged him deeply, committing his smell to memory and letting his rough beard tickle my forehead. Before I stepped away he gave me a final kiss on the forehead and I took Hesiod’s hand and stepped into the boat. The water carried me away and I felt, for the first time, worried about what was to come next. Poseidon had separated my family for so long. It was time I did something about it. I wasn’t going to allow him to keep my family apart for much longer.
