Once A Kingdom's Flame (Part V)

"I'm sorry..." The voice was shaky as you placed your cold hand on his shoulder. "I...I'm sorry." You retreated a bit as he stood.

"Shouto..." You reached out to try and comfort him but your hand was swatted away. 

"I'm sorry..." He slowly stood upright again. You took a step back as he turned around. "I truly am." You tried to scream but his hand slapped over your lips while the other one grabbed you roughly. It wasn't the prince. You had used so much energy running that you didn't have any strength to break free. Your eyes swelled with tears as you looked down to see him raising a dagger already stained with fresh blood. "The prince was not a bad person; the king is. The king is truly a monster." Was...? "I...the prince is about a mile east in the forest. Wounded but not fatally, not if he gets help quickly. The two of you must flee. The king ordered me to kill you both but...the prince truly loves you...go, now! Stay far away from this kingdom and live peacefully!" He released you and you instantly sprinted into the forest the way he was pointing. 

The forest floor was not kind to your bare feet but the adrenaline fueling your entire being suppressed the pain for the time being.

"Shouto!" You cried out, looking everywhere while doing your best to dodge branches and roots. "Shouto!" You heard leaves crunch to your right. "Sh-Shouto?"

"(Y-Y/n)?" You completely broke down hearing the pained groan saying your name.

"Shouto..." You saw him sitting up against a tree, his right hand covering the top of his left arm. "Oh god..." Blood was everywhere. You dropped to your knees in front of him and used all of your strength to tear a strip of your skirt off. "It's alright." You were saying that more to convince yourself than him. He dropped his hand and let out a strained hiss as you wrapped the cloth around his arm tightly. "Shouto..." He hung his head, fighting the overwhelming desire to sleep. "Shouto..." You held his face gently, your hands cupping his cheeks as you raised his head up. "You're alive..." Your body shook and tears flooded your vision. 

"(Y-Y-Y/n)..."

"No, shh. Just rest, it's okay. We need to get you medical help so that wound doesn't get infected. I...I'll follow the river, there must be a village close by." He shook his head and gently took your hands from his face, entwining his fingers with yours. 

"You found the note..." You really wanted to give him a piece of your mind but you knew then that there was a story that you didn't know everything about.

"Wh-What are you doing?" You leaned forward to stop him as he tried to stand. "You should sit or lay down!" He collected his balance leaning against the tree.

"I'll lay down when we have a room."

"What do you mean?" He smirked and started laughing. He shook his head and pointed behind you. "Oh." You saw lights and clusters of buildings about a three minute walk away; a village. For the first time in a long time, you laughed.
