May 10th was the finish of something I could never have imagined. The friendship between Mia and I had been something so deeply nourished that the stem of our friendship was unbreakable. May 10th was the scissors to our ornate friendship bloom. The events that followed after that date catapulted us into an aura of self-realization and growth. We were no longer the sophomores unidentifiable amongst the rich teens; studded with weekend getaways to their villas on the Hawaiian coast or their hefty Land Rover. We would morph into something unimaginable and undefinable.

I walked into the shop, neon pink signs provided a glowing alter over the lines of different ice cream flavors. The rows looked like the paper paint samples that you would grab from Home Depot, each sporting a unique color that gave off a different energy. It was my first day, first job and the first day to be part of something I had no control over. Ali, my boss, craned to look over at me from across the cash register, "Izzy! Oh my gosh, you're finally here!" she yelled out, ushering me over to the register. Ali was a senior at the nearby prep school and had been working here for 2 years. She went on to explaining how the register works and tricks to the mastering the perfect scoop.

After she was done, she sent me back up to behind the counter as the first and only customer came in, I didn't recognize him but the first glance at his long curly mud blonde hair gave it away. His thick eyebrows peeked out from underneath the maroon baseball cap he had on his head. Standing at a good 6'2 was Tony Lehman. On his arm was Ray Amusso, a year above me in school, she prided around like the gorgeous seductress she was. It was just my luck that the first day on the job would entail having to serve the most elusive characters at Brighton Day School.

I snapped back to reality and lowered my eyes, breaking away from what I prayed wasn't a creepily long stare at Tony and Ray. As they approached the counter, Ray broke off from Tony and pondered at the rows of flavors, pacing as she studied them. "This is cute, I've never been here before," Tony muttered as he looked up to the menu on the wall above my head. I couldn't offer a response, since my social anxiety had turned me into a mute the second they walked in. Ray sauntered back over and flipped her straight black hair over her shoulder. "Okay babe, what do you want?" Tony asked, as he turned his head to expose his perfectly sculpted jawline.

She locked eyes with me, her exquisite green gems peeking out from underneath a blanket of thick black lashes.

"2 scoops of Matcha Vanilla, cup," she stopped abruptly, like an order from a general to his soldiers. I nodded and smiled, "Do you want any toppings?" I asked. "No, just the ice cream," she said. Her eyes never left mine for that 20 second interaction. I looked down at the screen and put their orders in.

They walked over to the seats and sat down while I scooped up their order, making sure that everything was perfect. Ali looked on and helped me as I practiced the perfect scoop, and plopped them into the pink glossy cups. "Ok guys, your order is ready." I called out, my voice came out a little scratchy and pitchy than I had expected. They offered no response, but walked over and picked up the cups and I watched them walk out

As they opened the door, Ray looked over her shoulder and glanced my way, locking eyes with me again.
