TEN: EXPLANATION

CHAPTER TEN

MAX IS RUSHED OUT OF THE POOL AREA BY JANE, WHO HAS A TIGHT GRIP ON THE FORMER'S WRIST. it feels as though blood is everywhere, including on max's outfit that jane allowed her to change into before they ran out. there's blood on jane, which is smearing onto max. she's nearly in tears, terrified. they have to step over bodies of the other students that jane had just murdered.

once out of the building, max shivers. she's still wet from nearly being drowned, and the brisk air isn't doing any favors. she shakes under jane's grip, who understands that they should hurry inside.

max's mother is still at work, so jane quickly brings her into her and bram's apartment. bram sits at the kitchen table, sipping coffee. he look,s to the blood soaked girls and raises an eyebrow, confused. "these kids tried to drown her. i... they're dead," she says, breathless, "sit down, max, you need to rest."

   max feels lightheaded. was it because she almost drowned or was it because jane bit her? she does as she's told, leaning her head back and closing her eyes. "jane, be honest with me. are... are you a vampire?" although she can't see, she knows that jane has a disappointed look on her face. whether it be because she hid this from jane or she had to turn max so she wouldn't die, max wouldn't know. perhaps both.

   "y-" she stops for a moment, so max opens her eyes. jane's focus is on bram, who looks shocked. he asks if she's really about it do it, to which jane nods. "yes."

   "and now, so are you," bram adds, taking another sip of coffee.

   max's eyes widen. so it's true. jane is a vampire, and so is she.

   "oh," max says, her voice shaking. jane heads over and places a hand on max's shoulder for comfort. max looks jane in the eyes, and both girls look like they're going to cry. was it due to the mass murder done half an hour before or because they're stressed?

"you need sleep, max. really," jane begins, "i know you're tired. come with me." she grabs max's hand gently, leading her to the bathroom. "if you need a shower, here it is, and my bedroom is right next door when you're done. okay? we can talk about... this... later."

max presses a quick kiss to jane's lips, then heads into the room to take shower.

she's done in ten minutes, most of which were spent scrubbing at her wrists and crying. she changes into the clothes jane left her, then heads to jane's room with heavy eyes.

"it's gonna be okay, max. i promise," jane begins as max lays down next to her. "i only did it because you were dying. your pulse... it was weird."

"oh," she replies, "i'm sorry, i'm just trying to take this in."

"i understand," jane says. max falls asleep quickly, obviously exhausted. jane decides to do the same.

   jane is the first to wake up, so she decides to think over what she wants to talk to max about. maybe explain what she should do, since nobody was there to tell this to jane. yes, definitely that. perhaps they can come up with a plan for them so max doesn't have to leave her mother.

   her thoughts are interrupted by max quietly greeting her, still lying down. "hey," she mumbles.

   "i wanna talk about it now, if that's okay." max nods. "basically, you're a vampire now. and vampires can't eat or drink human food. i mean, they can, but you'll choke." max thinks back to the diner. "i want to stay here, and i know you do, too. so, you can't tell your mom, or anyone, for that matter. bram usually handles these situations, so if anyone sees you feeding or anything, tell him."

   "is he a vampire?"

   "no, he's too attached to his human boyfriend. i plan to, though, maybe once he finally gets himself into the trouble he's bound to get into," she laughs to herself. "maybe he turns him, then i would actually have two parental figures. a girl could wish," she then sighs, "i'm off topic."

   max stands up and hugs jane. "it's gonna be okay, jane."
