Story: The realm
Deign
It was late in the afternoon, the sun risen high above the trees and casting light down through the cracks. The ground below was dotted with specks of light that made it past the canvas of leaves that seemed to stretch for miles. And it did, the Elven forests took up a fourth of the land. It was dense and thick, teeming with any and all kinds of life one could think of. The greatest hunting grounds for any one who knew how to traverse the foliage and track the beasts within. Of course the elves like myself knew these lands like the back of our hands, having grown up here.
This place was made for us, created by our race's Divine, Sairah the Divine of life and death. She had created us and thus made this land specifically for us. So naturally this place was easy for us to survive in.
Taking a deep breathe, I looked down from the tree I sat upon. The deer I had been tracking all morning stood not but a few feet away, grazing on the waterlillies residing by the riverside. It had been here for several minuets and was still yet unaware that I sat watching it. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike. One would think " why not just attack now?" Well the reason is that even the slightest movement on my branch would spook it. I had to wait until it moved closer to the stream so that any sound would be blocked out by the flowing water.
Otherwise it would spook and run and I would have to spend another several hours tracking it down again. Uncle was waiting back at camp and I was growing hungry. Several more hours of this is something I had not the patience nor the time for.
My eyes narrowed in concentration as the deer took a step closer to the water's edge, and then another. Soon it rested right on the edge and bent in to drink. Now was as good a time as ever to make a move. Reaching in my pocket behind me, I pulled out a small silver knife, about the size of my hand. There was no handle since it was sharpened to a point on both sides. It resembled a diamond shape almost, except longer and sharper at the end points. Three fingers grasped it as one would hold a card and held it across my chest and beside my cheek. Arm parallel to the ground, I froze a moment to catch my aim, for an attack like this required near perfection.
Blue irises zeroed in on the spot in the center of the neck to the left of the cheek. Uncle told me that if any spot would take a deer down in one hit, it was that spot right there. And it was in clear sight for me to aim. In a quick movement, I swung my hand around, keeping it parallel to the ground. As it reached in front of my chest, fingers released the blade in a way that added momentum and threw it towards my target. A swish could be heard as it soared through the air and impacted the deer's neck with soft squish. A small yelp of surprise was all that was heard from the deer before it fell to the ground, dead. I sighed, relieved that the full day of hunting finally paid off. This deer was largely sized, it would last a couple days before we would need to hunt again.
Nimbly, I jumped down from the tree, landing in a crouch on the ground below. I dusted myself off before I stepped over to the deer. My knife stuck halfway out if the skin, small trails of blood flowing from the point of impact. A quick yank was all that was needed to dislodge the knife from the deer. I set that aside so I could focus on prepping the deer for travel. It was a bit of a trek to get back to Uncle's camp. Pulling my arm up, I ripped part of my sleeve off to tie around the neck of the animal, momentarily stopping the blood flow. The last thing I needed was a blood trail. Who knew what kind of creatures or people would be led to our camp from that.
Reaching again behind me, I took off the medium sized bag I carried on my back and dug inside. A few moments of rummaging produced a long rope, which I tied around the legs of my kill. Then I reached over and picked up the knife, rinsing it in the stream before replacing it into the pack attacked to my back pocket. With a grunt, I shouldered the other end of the rope and began the journey back go camp.
