Story: Displaced

We brought the buck down quickly, ending its life within mere seconds after it had hit the ground. Some would say it was heartless how it was taken down, but it was far better planned than how most would do it. Nothing was wasted, everything came in handy for the clan. A loss of life to further several others. That's what we were taught, it softened the blow of ending a life. Though personally I didn't mind killing if it helped to further our survival. I watched silently as other forms slinked out of the shadows of the trees. More clan members who came to retrieve the kill. That makes about four today, a large catch to last for the next few days. The clan would feast tonight, make more cloth from the hide, and use more materials for strong tools. Yeah, we were a bit old fashioned, but hey, it's helped us survive for centuries. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. With that I mind, I started to follow the others back home. A long days hunt is finally over, I can go home and sleep. Just thinking of my bed waiting for me to lay in had my tail swishing in anticipation.

All thoughts of home shifted suddenly as a strange scent crossed my nose. It was a new scent, something different... But what was it? I'm not one for succumbing to curiosity, but this time it seemed to draw me in. Something about that scent pulled me off into the opposite direction. Though of course my wandering did not go unnoticed.

//Hey Lyer? Where are you going? The clan is back this way.//

The voice of my best friend sounded in my head through the clan's mind link. Every clan had one as an easy way to communicate when in our wolven form as well as reach out in human form. We rarely used it in human form for anything important though. More so as a way to speak privately with friends when one didn't want certain things to be heard. Although sometimes the link was more annoying than helpful.

Ignoring the question, I continued on my journey to follow the scent as it drew me further from the other clan members. Like the friend he is, Kam ventured off to follow me. I didn't really care though, it's not like he'd listen if I told him to stay back. Neither would Mye, who of course was following behind Kam. Gotta love friends eh? They didn't seem to mind my disregard for their presence as the followed after me, which didn't bother me either. It's not the first time I've acted as if they were not there. They were used to it so there were no hard feelings. Which was good, less hassle for me.

The scent pulled me further and further into the forest, nesring the birder of our territory. Why was it leading me this way anyways? What was over this way? Certainly nothing worth all this effort right? Yet I'm still following it, so I guess it has some kind of significance. As we neared the border, I stopped a few paces from it, still hidden in the cover of the trees. Don't want to keet anything of my presence here, especially this close to the border when the patrols have least passed through. Violet eyes scanned the area, looking for the source of the scent that had interested me so. It smelled so...off. What was it?! Where was it?! There was no sign of anything and the frustration began to set in. Did I really run all this way for nothing?

Apparently so, for nothing was there but flowers, trees, and the scent marker that marked the end of clan land and the beginning of pack land. I huffed in annoyance, pawing at the ground and digging up a clump of dirt. This was a complete waste of time, of my time that I could have spent resting up in my bed. But no, I had to follow this stupid scent to no whereas send up with nothing. Follow a stupid scent that I can't even place where it came from. Me, one of the best trackers in the clan despite my yunge age. Ugh!

//Lyre? Dude, why'd you bring us to the border?//

Kam asked through our link. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed him and Mye standing behind me and looking at me curiously. For some reason that just irritated me further.
