The rest of the day passed by in a blur. I didn't bother to do any more work or even check whether my hand over notes were complete. I was too busy fuming. Briefly, I wondered whether I could hire a lawyer to look over the paperwork but finally in disgust, I shoved the mammoth sized pile of papers into my desk drawer and slammed it shut with some finality.
"Is there a problem?" I jumped to find Jennifer Love Looney peering at me intently. Trying to still my pounding heart, I glared at her.
"What on earth makes you think that there's a problem Jennifer?" I snapped.
"You seem awfully jumpy," Jennifer said.
"I'm fine, Jennifer," I replied. "Did you want something?"
"Well," Jennifer dropped her voice to a stage question. "I heard a rumour that there's going to be a break in tonight. Do you know anything about it?"
I looked at her, wondering if I would get into trouble for punching her lights out. Come to think of it, I probably could.
"Nope," I answered and deliberately turned my back to her, facing my computer screen and typing into an empty word document. "You know Jennifer, it might be an idea if you stopped listening to rumours so much and actually did your job."
"I swear to God she knows," I told the girls that night at dinner, as I viciously stabbed at a mushroom. "I don't know why but she does. I just don't get it. Do you think she's been eavesdropping?"
"There is no way she knows anything," Judy said, as she sipped her drink. "Look, just ignore her, okay? She's always been a bit of a weirdo. She's just trying to get under your skin because she knows that would really bother you. You're on edge because it's your last week and she's trying to piss you off. She can shove it. You seriously don't need to worry about her. The only thing we need to worry about is the fact that we get into that damn office, try to find some incriminating evidence against Archibald and, along with that dirty clip we've got, we can send it off to all those senior big boss types."
Christella furrowed her brow. "We need to make sure that any information we send those guys is sent anonymously okay? We don't need anybody questioning how we obtained this information."
I nodded my head. "You're right, of course." I looked at my watch. It was nearly six. "Show time," I breathed.
We quickly cleaned up and stacked the dishwasher. After turning it on, we headed towards the office.
"Let's go by a different route tonight," Christella suggested. "It might not be a good idea to be seen by anyone at Café Deluxe. You know, in case anyone from your workplace is having dinner there or something."
We all agreed and I thought of Robert, feeling a slight stab of pain. It really sucked that I would have to think about him right then and there. I quickly shook my head, as if I could physically shake the mental image of him out of my head. It didn't really work but I pretended that it did. What would he think of all this? Best not to wonder about that now.
Making it to the front of the building, we were confronted by the big glass doors of the building, which looked sinister in the dark. I suddenly thought of something.
"What about security cameras?" I blurted out. "We don't need to be caught on tape."
"Yes well there's no need to worry about that," Judy said solemnly. I turned to look at her questioningly and she shrugged. "They won't be working tonight."
I raised an eyebrow. "What..?"
"Let's just say I owe Aidan a big favour," Judy smiled and winked at me. "The security cameras won't be working tonight and nobody will realise until long after the fact."
