I pull on my robe and walk over to the refrigerator and grab some juice they tell me to drink and pour it in a wine glass. The wine glass is etiquette to get me prepared for missions they say. So many rules they have here. The rules are for our well being and for others that we are going to protect by going on these missions. We have to be fully trained in every aspect before we are even considered to go on a mission. I am 15 years young and they have taught us so much about the internet, about how people think, about etiquette, and so much more. So many lessons on just about everything in life. We had to be prepared to be able to play an instrument, teach, speak all languages, know all sorts of poisons and cures for them and how to fight, but most importantly how to survive. Your mission can't be finished if you are dead. You will have the information to finish the mission so you must stay alive to be able to finish the mission. You also can not move on to your next mission until you have completed the one before that. There is another way to not complete a mission but they also refuse to tell us that answer as well. It is a last resort if we can not complete a mission. I have a feeling that it is something like tell all of the information that you know and then you are killed for not being able to complete the mission.
I walk leisurely to the side door that leads to the balcony and open the door to go outside. The smell of fresh air stops me in my tracks and I close my eyes and just take in the fresh air. The air immediately relaxes me from the dream that always makes me tense, so I let out a sigh and open my eyes and finish walking onto the porch and lean on the railing looking over the land.
I know this land like the back of my hand. I have ran all over here for training in all kinds of weather. As a present they let us get a tattoo of whatever we want on our 16th birthday. The only reason is because there is makeup to let us hide it and is waterproof. All these rules... They keep telling us it is for protection, but who is it protecting exactly?
I hear rustling in the bushes down on the ground in the garden. I look closely and try to pick out where the noise is coming from. I hear the bushes move again and see a bird fly out of the bush. I try to see its eyes to tell if it is a normal bird or a shifter. The bird flies away avoiding letting me see its eyes on purpose. I run to my weapon cabinet and grab my knives and my sword if I need them and quickly put them in my jacket and put my jacket and run out the door and jumped off the balcony. I let myself fall for a little while before I let my wings out to catch me. I open my eyes and quickly find the bird and go after it. It tries to keep near the trees to make it harder for me to find it, but I am of no sort a normal person, so it was easy finding him. I grab one of my knives and throw it aiming for its wings. I see the bird jerk and start to fall to the ground.
I close my wings and follow the bird to the ground and let them back out again to slow me down and ease me to the ground.
"Change."
I take the knife out of the birds wing and it 'skwaks' but nonetheless it shifts into a human man.
"Why are you here?"
The man is holding his arm and looks up at me and chuckles.
"Like I would tell you."
I see him flinch at me looking at my eyes, guessing that they changed color. Now it is my turn to chuckle. I smile at him and take out another blade from my jacket and swing both knives in my hand.
"I would love to torture it out of you. Would you mind me doing that?"
I heard his heart race at that but he plays it off cooly.
"I would prefer you didn't, my clan is coming for me anyway. You wouldn't get it out of me before they got here even if you tried."
I slowly walked over to him and kept showing off my knife skills.
"Oh you think they are coming."
I chuckle and look around.
"Where are they then? Hmm? You don't think I put a boundary spell on this place after I found out that you were here? No one can get in or out of this place until I say they can."
He looked shocked.
"But you are just-"
"Just a phoenix? No, I am many things, a phoenix is just one of them."
His heart rate speeds up a lot now and he now has terror on his face.
I laugh, full on scary laugh.
"Yes, now that is the look I am used to. Now you know how strong I am, please, enlighten me now on my you are here."
He looks around frantically hoping his clan got through somehow. They will but it will be too late.
"I, I-"
"You what? Cat got your tongue?"
He now looks like he just crapped in his pants. Great. I roll my eyes at him.
"Dude, just tell me why you are here and I can kill you quickly."
"I- It was a job. I was paid to come here. They never said why just to try to not get caught. I thought it was easy enough. Make some small noise and then leave. Easy peasey."
"Well, your luck just got really crappy."
He started to cry.
"I just needed some money. I have a family, they need me."
I nodded my head.
"They all do. They all need money and they all have a family. Here we don't have none of that. No family, no money, just jobs. You came on our base and ignored our boundaries. Then you beg for your life and say someone paid you?"
I laugh.
"That may be true but no one leaves the base unless we grant it. Thing is dude... You don't have permission."
His eyes got wide and he starts crying more.
"NO! MY FAMILY NEEDS ME! YOU CAN'T DO THIS! THERE ARE RULES AND LAWS!"
"Rules and laws? Wow, like I care."
I walk over to him and break his neck. I did not want to listen to him any more than I had to.
